Small addendum: It's tricky to see what precisely SBE did fund in FY26 because almost everything was relabeled as 'cross-directorate activities'—a catch-all for directorate-wide funding. This plot, though, gives a sense of how many program areas (30+) SBE had previously funded and how they were cut.
Plot shows new grants in basically every area of SBE going to zero in 2026. Note that there is some double counting as some grants are in multiple areas. (e.g. Sociology and Economics)

As recently as September, SBE's website proudly declared that it supported 63% of all research in US social and psychological sciences and worked to "creat[e] opportunities everywhere." Now, that message is gone.
Wayback machine version of SBE site: SBE provides 63% of the funding for all academic research in social and psychological sciences in the U.S.

Through its core disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs, as well as contributions to cross-directorate NSF investments, SBE supports approximately 5,000 scientists, educators and students in a typical year.

The directorate's priorities include:

In response to our questions, an NSF spokesperson said that SBE has not been shut down. But with zero SBE-specific funding opportunities, no review panels, and dwindling numbers of staff, it's hard to see the directorate continuing for much longer.

How did this happen? Officially, proposals went through the same process as before: peer review, program officer recommendation, section head approval. Unofficially, the choice was taken out of SBE's hands, going above the directorate head, Christina Freyman and to NSF leadership.
In the past, panels of independent scientists vetted proposals; program officers recommended those found worthy, and section heads approved them. But a new, unofficial process has removed decision-making power from all directorate staff and leadership. Only a few proposals in administration priority areas, such as cognitive science and AI, were allowed to move ahead, according to the former staffers. Program officers sent them to Freyman, who met with Simon Malcomber, NSF’s chief science officer. “Then he would come back with some decision,” a former staffer explains. “So it wasn’t his decision-making. He was in consult with others.” If Malcomber said a proposal was acceptable, a program officer was given the green light to officially recommend it. “They were very, very careful in terms of never putting anything in writing about what the process was,” the former staffer says. NSF did not respond to questions about the process.

In addition to spending less money and making fewer new grants, SBE also dramatically narrowed where it made those new grants. Areas such as economics, sociology, and archaeology received few to no grants.
Grantmaking gutted
The National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) awarded far fewer new awards than typical in fiscal year 2026—just 91. (The fiscal year runs from 1 October to 30 September.) Most of the new grants focused on cognitive science and artificial intelligence, in alignment with White House priorities; offices that support fields such as economics, sociology, and research ethics, as well as postdoctoral fellowships, awarded no grants at all.

But no part was hit as hard as SBE, which went from an average of 800 new grants to just 91, a precipitous, 90% decline. SBE spent just 95 million on new grants, far less than its average of 247 million.

NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

Bitget crypto exchange hacked for $388 million, pauses withdrawals
Attackers stole $387.5 million in crypto assets from Bitget, a cryptocurrency exchange originally founded in Singapore and headquartered out of the Seychelles. Centralized stablecoin issuers Circle and Tether (issuers of USDC and USDT) froze $318,000 in stolen assets, but the vast majority were swapped to decentralized cryptocurrencies and have not been frozen.
Bitget CEO Gracy Chen has said the company believes that a North Korean cybercrime group may be behind the theft. Bitget halted withdrawals shortly after the theft was noticed, citing the need to prevent attackers from stealing more assets. Bitget has said they have sufficient assets to cover the stolen funds.

Dengue-mAb 🦠✅ cut viral load by up to 2.35 log at 24h vs placebo 1.29 (P≤.003). Fever cleared in 2-3.5h vs 26.8h placebo. No serious adverse effects in 250 pts.

Safety and Preliminary Efficacy of Dengue Monoclonal Antibody in Adult Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Importance  Dengue outbreaks are increasing in frequency and intensity. In the absence of any specific treatment, a pan-serotype recombinant monoclonal antibody (Dengue-mAb) was tested in adult patients with dengue as a therapeutic option. Objective  To assess the safety and effect of a single dose of Dengue-mAb on dengue viremia at different dose levels among patients with dengue.Design, Setting, and Participants  A phase 2, single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted from September 19, 2021, to May 13, 2023, at 12 hospitals in India. Study participants were aged 18 to 60 years with dengue and a history of fever onset within 48 hours. Key exclusion criteria were severe dengue, hemoglobin less than 10 g/dL, absolute neutrophil count less than 500/mm3, total leukocyte count less than 1500/mm3, platelet count less than 50 000/mm3, and any other clinically significant disorders. Data were analyzed from January 11, 2024, to March 26, 2024.Interventions  Participants were randomly allocated 1:1:1:1:1 using an interactive web response system to receive 1 of 4 dose levels of Dengue-mAb (3, 5, 7, or 9 mg/kg) or placebo by slow intravenous infusion.Main Outcomes and Measures  Primary outcomes were reduction in viremia at 24 hours and causally related serious adverse events (SAEs). Secondary outcomes were RNAemia, fever, and hematologic and pharmacokinetic parameters.Findings  A total of 250 participants were randomized, with 50 participants in each group. The overall median age was 30 years (IQR, 24-37 years), and 180 participants (72.3%) were male. There were no causally related SAEs. The adjusted mean (SE) viral log reduction at 24 hours was significantly higher with Dengue-mAb—from 1.93 (0.23) with 3 mg/kg (P = .04) to 2.35 (0.27) with 9 mg/kg (P = .003)—compared with placebo (1.29 [0.22]), using a mixed model for repeated measures. Participants with detectable viremia (n = 32) at baseline were negative for dengue virus by 8 hours when treated with a 5- to 9-mg/kg dose of Dengue-mAb compared with 72 hours with placebo. Median time to fever clearance was 3.5 (95% CI, 1.0-24.0) hours (hazard ratio [HR], 2.6 [95% CI, 1.0-6.4]) with Dengue-mAb 5 mg/kg (n = 14) and 2.0 (95% CI, 0.5-6.0) hours (HR, 2.8 [95% CI, 1.2-6.8]) with Dengue-mAb 7 mg/kg (n = 14), compared with 26.8 (95% CI, 1.0-50.5) hours with placebo (n = 12). At 24 hours, between 13 of 14 participants (92.9%; 95% CI, 66.1%-99.8%) with Dengue-mAb (3 mg/kg), 14 of 14 participants (100.0%; 95% CI, 76.8%-100.0%) with Dengue-mAb (5 mg/kg and 7 mg/kg), and 16 of 17 participants (94.1%; 95% CI 71.3%-99.9%) with Dengue-mAb (9 mg/kg); and 7 of 12 participants (58.3%; 95% CI, 27.7%-84.8%) with placebo had fever clearance. Conclusions and Relevance  In this randomized clinical trial, Dengue-mAb was safe and well tolerated. Dengue-mAb rapidly reduced dengue viremia and fever at doses of 5 mg/kg and 7 mg/kg, making this the first therapeutic against wild-type dengue virus to show preliminary efficacy in humans.Trial Registration  Clinical Trial Registry-India Identifier: CTRI/2021/07/035290

Opportunity to transform the quality of indoor air. The figure illustrates how indoor environments can transition from passive spaces to active
protectors of respiratory health through integrated sensing of airborne pollutants, pathogens, and allergens; occupant feedback; and automated responses to improve IAQ. These capabilities could also provide high-resolution environmental data that can deepen our understanding of the pathobiology and adverse health effects of poor IAQ on pulmonary, cardiovascular, neurocognitive, and metabolic disorders across the lifespan.
