Today in one day off work I managed to fit in: School run, linocut printing, laundry, workout, BFI showing of Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall, sushi, gelato, 3 local bands, several pints, back to find the CW at CH record waiting for me, and toast. Do I really have to go to work tomorrow?

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

#NowPlaying It's hard to think of many solo artists that have managed to stay relevant over 15 studio albums, but Beck has dropped this absolute beauty today. Interestingly, Dylan's 15th was Blood on the Tracks & there are definitely some thematic similarities between the two. Instant AOTY contender

Deep cuts: how one Londoner’s fake vinyl empire sheds light on ‘industrial scale’ fraud
Thousands of knock-off records worth a fortune are being seized in the UK by anti-counterfeit police stings From 2017 onwards, Rehan Ahmed styled himself as a savvy business owner. But behind the facade of a successful entrepreneur lurked one stark fact: his empire was built on fakery. On Friday, the man behind the biggest-ever UK case of producing fraudulent vinyl, who sold counterfeit copies of records by some of the world’s biggest artists including Taylor Swift, Coldplay and Kendrick Lamar, was jailed. About 1,000 years ago, this ‘Tables’ game board was smashed up with an axe and thrown into a rubbish pit at Gloucester Castle! 🪓 😳 Ancient evidence perhaps of a sore loser!? 😂 Ironically it is the world’s oldest surviving complete tables set! Gloucester Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows the circa 1,000 year-old Gloucester 'Tables' game set. The set consists of 24 obelisk-shaped bone strips with pointed ends, and a bone panel border, which were originally inlaid onto a wooden base which has not survived, together with thirty disc-shaped bone counters (not all shown in my photo). The bone inlays are decorated with carved interlace and ring-and-dot patterns. Each game counter is intricately carved and decorated with a human or animal figure. The tables set is displayed on a sandy surface in a museum display case at Gloucester Museum. Tables is an early version of backgammon. It is the oldest complete tables set in the world

This Roman perfume bottle shaped like a bird is 2,000 years old, yet it looks like a modern design! 📷 Corning Museum of Glass glasscollection.cmog.org/objects/7194... #Archaeology
This photo by the Corning Museum of Glass shows a Roman perfume container made of transparent light blue glass in the shape of a bird. Seen in profile facing right, it has a long narrow beak inclined upwards. The head and neck are represented by single tubular element which merges with a plump, stylised body with a long, horizontal, tapering tail. Size: H 6 cm, L 11.7 cm. It is displayed against a grey background.

According to the museum, this bottle and others like it often contain powdered remnants of perfume. Glassmakers created the graceful bird shape by manipulating a glass bubble at the furnace. The bottle was filled with perfume and sealed over the fire. To use the perfume, its owner would crack the bird’s tail and reseal it after each use.

Rewilded land remains green amid drought-stricken English countryside, images show
National Trust’s Holnicote estate says restored wetlands and rivers offer proof of resilience to drought, wildfires and flooding Aerial footage of an estate in Somerset has revealed the benefits of rewilding land in the face of extreme weather brought about by the climate crisis. The area of the National Trust’s Holnicote estate where rivers have been returned to their natural courses and wetlands have been restored have remained green and lush during the five heatwaves across the summer. In contrast, the surrounding countryside has become parched and brown. Continue reading...

If a White man is accused of plagiarism in academia, he doesn't resign. He doesn't get fired. He eats a few retractions, apologizes, gets mocked by students for a few years, and moves on with his life. Y'know, same way as if he rapes his grad students and plagiarizes his wife's writings.
