#FossilFriday brings canoodling Seymouria, a largely terrestrial Permian tetrapod thought to be a stem amphibian. This replica is from our collection, but the original is apparently at Carnegie. They're called the Tambach lovers, although Seymouria aggregations have been found elsewhere too. 🧪⚒️
Replica cast of two canoodling Seymouria sanjuanensis, early Permian, Germany.

Huh, didn’t notice the donor until just now. Guess the original's at Carnegie!

Welcome back to another #mineralmonday Here is a cut and polished slab of Banded Fluorite from China. Fluorite can form in hydrothermal veins that carry large amounts of calcium and fluorine. Those veins find open spaces in rocks and eventually cool and crystallize.

It's 96 degree weather here in Mississippi collecting fossils from the Late Cretaceous (Late Campanian) Demopolis Formation. ~76 million years ago, the black belt region of Mississippi and Alabama was covered in a warm shallow sea teeming with life. The round objects you see around me are oysters!

A compete cephalic spine fossil from a hybodont shark resting in a person's palm. Life reconstruction of a female and male Hybodus hauffianus, based primarily on the skull and horn arrangement proposed by Maisey (1982, 1986, 1987) and on complete body fossils of H. hauffianus, also figured by Maisey. This fossil is an example of what is called a "mortality plate" as it contains the remains of several animals that all died around the same time. Trilobites were some of the first animals to evolve an exoskeleton, and as a result fossilize very well compared to other Cambrian creatures.
