I’ve seen friends and even fellow professors saying “well, in her original statement” about the Cornell 7 case. But the truth is that Jane Doe called it rape, then Cornell “condensed” the report, and sent it to the district attorney. Why omit the part where she said she was raped while “condensing”?

Aside from the barbarism of state sanctioned murder in general, Pike spent most of her time on death row in solitary confinement for a (admittedly brutal) crime she committed as a teenager and for which her male accomplice only got a life sentence. The whole system is bad.

Good job, California. 15 states to go. No child should marry. A child who marries isn’t emancipated, her (and it’s usually a girl) new spouse becomes her guardian. If he abuses her, she cannot go to a domestic violence shelter. She cannot initiate a divorce. She can’t have her own money.
