And beyond it all, we should bear in mind that, despite the backslide, the democratic west has more rights and autonomy than the vast majority of the world. We have the agency to make things happen. And we have a responsibility to use that. The future is not determined yet.

This is a sobering and correct observation. And god, what a bad weekend. Would add though, that now is not the time to despair. Far right politics is a self-destructive force. The job is to try and make it so that it takes something less than a destructive world war to diminish it significantly.

I simply do not understand what's going on in Labour that renders its leaders incapable of finding a TV camera and speaking out against street violence. Even if you assume they agree about immigration, violence is wrong, unpopular AND against the interests of any even vaguely left wing govt.

One thing Labour really needs to get through its head is that government has huge agenda setting capability. If the prime minister or home secretary calls these people what they are that will form parts of headlines and the like. We saw this under Starmer when the correct response finally came

I appreciate they would deny it, but they spent the last two days arguing about if some ethnicities can be British, announcing they'd declare a state or emergency to push through their policies, and now this, it's a very straightforwardly fascist movement.

Mahmood's proposals would force medium-skilled & care workers to leave the UK & would deter high skill workers from coming in future. This would widen the deficit/fiscal home. Would be deliberate economic and political self-harm for Burnham/Healey to proceed with them. inews.co.uk/news/politic...

I don't think you can get a better measure of Dolly than how she was brought up in a house were some of her siblings couldn't read, so she set up a foundation where literally anyone could sign-up to have a curated, age-appropriate book, delivered to their children until they entered kindergarten.

One reason why I fundamentally do not relate to this fear in any country is because at core I think that if your national identity is so thin, so weak, that it can be undone by the colour of the skin of the people who carry its banner, then you fundamentally have no faith in your culture.

The thing that really grinds my gears about this is the dishonesty. The biggest implication of this guidance is that trans people will have to live their lives very differently. But they are entirely absent from this framing. You'd be forgiven for thinking this didn't affect them at all.

I’m glad that the @goodlawproject.org is launching a legal challenge against the EHRC’s new Code of Practice, which is dangerous, unworkable and has been opposed by a quarter of all MPs. The Code will discriminate against trans people and subject many others to gender policing based on stereotypes.

Emily Thornberry’s words on Radio 4 in response to the Green win in Gorton and Denton. This is why wins like this are so important, whatever you may think of the Greens (much like the immigration rebellion brewing).
"I dread even saying this... but I think that we've ended up in the wrong place on trans, and we've done that by treading very self-consciously and not actually following our hearts, which is that trans people are on the margins, they are vulnerable.
"If the Labour Party doesn't look after trans people, what are we about?
"They're most likely to get beaten up. They're the ones who are most likely to have prejudice against them. We should not be indulging in anything that marginalises them even more."
