"Suggest you google this guy" Manchester City Council responded to my 2013 Freedom of Information request for details of their deal with Manchester City by flagging my background to City's chief communications officer. Deeply inappropriate (and that's being generous).

Not sure if it's feed selection-by-curation or a funny little trend, but loving the amount of GW/Warhammer chat on here this week. Getting back into it after ~25 years has been the best of the 'hitting 40' decisions I've made. Cannot recommend enough the joy of diving back into a childhood hobby.

This is, of course, the very measured and appropriate reaction of an organisation, and its supporters, that believes fully in its innocence

Manchester City cheated Premier League rules, the Commission found. Did it also cheat HMRC? We've examined the decision and leaked Mancini documents. We think City likely failed to pay £12m in tax. There should be a criminal investigation. Thread:

Freeing myself of both the smart watch, and the sense that I needed a smart watch in the first place, were liberating beyond belief. See also: fitness bands and anything else that made me believe that I needed to be self-surveilling for my own good.

Been thinking about this a touch more today, and also one of the things I've seen plenty of people saying; that there's nobody involved with Manchester City for whom we should feel any sympathy. For me, that's true except in one instance - rank and file staff, and particularly those in comms.

Can City get expelled from the Premier League? What competition would they go into? What role does the independent regulator play? Who knows? Well I do, because I checked. Come, join me on a guided tour through the chaos...

They should've, but we should also loudly protest our partnership with we never have. We never had a real protest for Visit Rwanda, nor against Thomas Partey. A lot of Arsenal fans wanted Usmanov. It's them but it could've been us or any other club. It's pathetic. It's past time to wake up.

As someone who's worked for the last decade+ as a sports comms bod, I keep wondering what would compel you to advise the media strategy that Manchester City have used over the past five days. The only answer I can get to is: you wouldn't. It's absurd.

This is quite something. It wouldn't surprise me if the appeals procedures took an extremely long time from here, but the pressure for serious sanctions (given both volume and scale of findings of guilt) will be enormous.

In any remotely sane time, this is the sort of thing that would prompt immediate political condemnation. Government inaction is an enabling factor, and they need to recognise it as such.

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

The RNLI has said the abuse of volunteers in Portsmouth has forced it to close the lifeboat station there and stop operating since September 10. Nearby stations have been providing cover to the area instead. One of the UK's largest coastal cities without a lifeboat because of the far-right.

We can all mock this guy, but I remind you all that "deficit is a word that sounds like loss and we should avoid deficits" was also the underlying logic - the whole underlying logic - behind austerity, and nobody has yet been willing to come out and call George Osborne a dumbass over it.

This is absurd on so, so many levels. The first nursery that both my daughters attended had male staff. They were exceptional, as were all of the staff, and their presence was a very welcome presence of men in the childcare workforce. And of course they changed nappies.

Struggling to work out how insecure you'd have to be to feel uncomfortable about seeing political content in non-English languages. What, precisely, would make you uncomfortable? Why would that be? And how would that not say more about you, a senior politician, than the content itself? Bad look.

Started and finished this today, and feel like it will probably end up being the best thing I read this year. Beautifully, powerfully, understatedly written, and reminds me again why I’m so thrilled @andotherstories.bsky.social exists.
The cover to The Sleep Thief by Ibtisam AzemA passage from the book, which reads:

“The ten-shekel note was wet in Shahin’s fingers. He didn’t say a word. He placed the bundle on the table and left. When he left the cafe, his laughs, which usually waited for him outside, had gone too. I can’t remember his laugh, but stuck in my memory like colocynth are the tears her never let fall.”

Feels from that first half that Arsenal have evolved in attack this season (good!), but that it’s put Gyokeres right back to the start of his adaptation (bad!). Last season felt like we needed to play more to his strengths. This, so far, feels like the onus is on him.

The UK government, the Opposition, and large sections of the UK media have enabled the rise of violent racism in the country. It is time for a firm and principled stance, and an organised and robust pushback against those funding and fuelling it.

I simply do not understand what's going on in Labour that renders its leaders incapable of finding a TV camera and speaking out against street violence. Even if you assume they agree about immigration, violence is wrong, unpopular AND against the interests of any even vaguely left wing govt.
