I also really love this infographic we did. The magazine archive is a collaborative effort. We've scanned thousands of magazines, but we're also relying on years of scanning work by the community and partnerships with the industry. It takes a village!
30% of our magazines were provided by Retromags. 33.4% were scanned by the Video Game History Foundation. Magazine publishers and staff provided another 10.8%. In declining order, other contributor groups are "Various Internet Archive users," CGW Museum, Out-of-Print Archive, and other community groups.

in 1627 someone published a text called 'Woe to Drunkards' with an honest to goodness Chad knight vs. Virgin fop meme
"In a woodcut on the title-page of 'Woe to Drunkards,' a sermon preached by Samuel Ward, of Ipswich, 1627, the vices of that age are typically contrasted with the virtues of a former one. In the upper compartment we are shown what men were of old by the open Bible, the foot in the stirrup, and the hand grasping the lance; while in the lower, the degeneracy of their descendants is typified by the leg and foot, decorated with a broad silk garter and a large rosette; by cards and dice, and a hand holding at the same time a lighted pipe and a drinking cup with a cockatrice in it. Twenty years afterwards, these types would have been more strictly applicable, with the inscriptions merely transposed."

Shall we play a game? What a paper actually says vs. what hasty commenters make of it. Exhibit A and B. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Nonacademic placements are not necessarily a problem to solve—especially if departments are transparent about student outcomes. My colleagues who left academia have gone on to successful careers and do not regret their decisions. This also appears to be true more broadly. In a survey of political science PhDs 10 years after completing their degrees, 77.8% of those who left academia did not regret completing it and would do it over again. Another 11% would still earn a PhD—but in another field. Furthermore, those who did not find an academic position and became managers or executives reported slightly higher job satisfaction than tenured faculty (Main, Prenovitz, and Ehrenberg Reference Main, Prenovitz and Ehrenberg2019; Nerad and Cerny Reference Nerad and Cerny2003).
Vladimir Kogan
@vkoganpolisci

The DEl angle is getting the most attention, but more striking is that only 26% of new poli sci PhDs found tenure track jobs. Even Harvard is <50%! That's already a highly selected group that actually finishes degree.
We need an honest conversation about PhD demand vs. supply.

Figure 2
Placements and Non-Placements into Tenure-Track Positions by Institution

The figure shows the number of candidates not placed (x-axis) and placed (y-axis) into tenure-track positions after the 2023-2024 job-market cycle. The 45-degree line corresponds to nstitutions that placed half of their candidates. The lower line corresponds to institutions that placed one third of their candidates. Points that otherwise would overlap have beer littered slightly.
