Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

I’m sorry but I might not recover from this
In 1903, a young soldier wrote to the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, consumed by doubts about his future...
Rilke wrote back:July 16, 1903
You are so young, so before all beginning, and I want to beg you, as much as I can, dear sir, to be patient towards all that is unsolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue.
Do not now seek the answers, that cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything.
Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.
Yours,
Rainer Maria Rilke

This is the basic trick of Roko's Basilisk. Like many supposed thought experiments noodled over by guys who thought Heath Ledger's Joker was the most important moral philosopher of the 21st century, it dresses up as an ethical conundrum what is in truth a deeply evil enticement to abandon the concept of human intention altogether.
Decision-making truly cannot get more animal and reactionary than to extend fixed conclusions about what humanity is like out into the imagined indefinite future, conceived as boundary walls defining the path that future can take, and react to that future before it has even had a chance to
arrive. It makes the future into the past. It is inherently regressive, fascist.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Republicans, in their infinite wisdom, left a big gambling loophole in the Medicaid work requirements. I'm no fan of the gambling industry, but if you are on Medicaid and struggling to deal with the work requirements, taking a $580 bet on both sides of an outcome is one way of getting around them.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

Sociopaths who pretend to have earned billions of dollars are not worried about a potential extinction event. They're worried we're going to destroy and bury everything that has given them a measure of power that no one person should ever possess, and that we will do so with zero concern for them.

They embrace and fall in love. 60 years later, one of the Feds is on his deathbed. He says "I've been lying this whole time. I just said I was a Fed to impress you." The other man leans in, smiling and says "I know. I'm a Fed." Tears of melancholic joy stream down their faces.

Acheter, meaning 'to buy', is a French verb that it gets from Latin acceptāre 'to take'. The Old Norman equivalent to acheter was acater, from which Middle English gained the position of an 'acater', an official who bought provisions. This lost its initial A in English, giving us the word 'cater'.

Can we all just turn our brains on for ten fucking seconds? Yes, AI shipping code at all, even if sometimes it is slow or doesn't work correctly, is very impressive from a technological standpoint. It is miles ahead of anything that I thought could be accomplished in 2018. The state-of-the-art in 2018 was garbage. That doesn't mean that you aren't having a ton of bullshit marketed to you.
