I don't think people really understand the psychic impact of knowing that multiple times a day every day your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and everyone who could ever have any power over you is being flooded with agitprop designed to make them hate you

The political and cultural response to 9/11 was to briefly mouth some "Islam is not to blame" platitudes and then declare total war on Muslim people and the Muslim world and we're entering the 25th year of it with no end in sight.

The bar for progressive policies is: "did this unilaterally solve the entire gigantic systemic issue without making a single person sad?" The bar for conservative policies is: "did the people pushing this yell out the name of a real problem before doing something unrelated, cruel and ineffective?"

I have a piece in the NYT today arguing that the law should permit victims of ICE abuse to sue not just individual officers, but supervisors and policymakers like Stephen Miller and Gregory Bovino. A Democratic president and Congress could do this in 2029. And they could make it retroactive.

Trying to pick apart a woman's text messages to prove she's lying about being raped is gutter behavior. Consent can be revoked at any time and reading insinuations into text messages that the sender denies were there is ACTUAL journalistic malpractice. I would not trust a man who does this!

If roughing up a girlfriend and locking her in a room was a virile, authentic a rejection of “smoothgroined” “HR lady” politics, but a rape is too far, then what’s at stake is not a principled rejection of violence against women but a cynical assessment of how much violence a man can get away with.

With this ruling, the birthright issue is not going away. The right hasn't really begun *organizing* around getting rid of the citizenship clause. Like Roe, this will be their fight for a generation. And if the Democrats just say "we won" and ignore it, like Roe, the Republicans will eventually win.

The profound part of Juneteenth for me is that before this was made a holiday, there was no official celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. When the 13th Amendment passed in December 1865, the legislators who witnessed its enshrinement imagined that the day would be remembered.

Democrats have a lot of problems: poor leadership, corruption, lack of conviction, weakness against Trump, support for Israel, the age of their members, refusal to support extremely popular policies, etc. A problem they do not have is not speaking in plain language. That's just completely made up.

IT’S PRONOUNCED “ZINE” – a lovely little badge spotted at the SF Zine Fest in 2015. Made by zinester / artist Amy Burek (aka Awkward Ladies Club). Check out their amazing zines and other work: www.awkwardladiesclub.com
A large pink badge (or pin) is pinned to a denim shirt and reads in capital letters: IT'S PRONOUNCED "ZINE". Zine is spelled Z, I, N, E, which doesn't help anyone confused about how to pronounce it and that is the beauty of it. In case you're wondering, zine rhymes with bean.

Roberts, like many conservatives of his generation, believes enforceable standards to prevent discrimination against Black people in employment, schooling, housing, or the electoral process are an affront to liberty, while the actual discrimination is, if it even exists, the natural order of things

It's impolite to call Musk a genocidal white nationalist because "civility" in American discourse functions not as a neutral procedural norm but as an asymmetric weapon to shield the powerful from accurate moral characterization while policing the tone of those who object.

Actually we should just give citizenship to every undocumented person in the United States who wants it. Walking over an imaginary line isn't some great moral atrocity. Making people live in the shadows as a permanent underclass absolutely IS.

I've been saying it a lot, but these deaths line up with what happened in early concentration camps during other regimes: Deaths from poor conditions, disease, or abuse. These deaths are not accidental. They are the direct result of a camp system that is designed to harm those being imprisoned.

Awfully hard to square the claims that ICE is focused on removing violent criminals that are so dangerous we can't let them be around with the fact that ICE tricks their targets by pretending to need help and waiting for neighborly types to respond by offering to help a stranger for free.

Notice how the popular media narrative has moved on, while people on the ground in Minneapolis are still struggling and crying out that things are as bad as ever. This is how fascist regimes operate — overreach, recalibration, normalization. Get louder, not quieter.

The bulk of the national discourse is focused on preventing white people from getting caught in the crosshairs of ICE’s violence. And the reason that feels so crazymaking in Minnesota is because we were organizing before Renee Good’s murder to protect people of color targeted by ICE.

ICE is not broken. It's agents murdering people, taking trophies of victims, using illegal tactics, breaking laws, spreading terror, and leaving death cards are not isolated events, outliers, or accidents. ICE is operating exactly as intended.

Almost every reason people have for defunding or abolishing ICE is also a reason to defund or abolish the police, yet many people who are rightly calling for action against ICE would never come close to doing to the same for police. But this fight goes beyond just ICE. ICE represents a larger issue.

The speed and manner with which Trump's campaign to expel all LatAm immigrants from the US became a claim of US sovereignty over the entire region shows that the problem was one of status, not presence. Trump II has no problem with a two-tier caste system, whether inside or outside US borders.
