New Preprint 🥳 Here we wondered how phages that have been extensively studied in laboratory E. coli strains actually behave when they encounter a real pathogen such as O157:H7 strain...one with a far more complex cell surface & one of the most consequential foodborne pathogens in the United States.

Ever wonder what really goes down in the microscopic battleground of a catheter-associated UTI? 🦠⚔️ Our new review unpacks the Host-Pathogen Interactions during CAUTIs. Thank you, Kurt Kohler and Alyssa La Bella @alabella14.bsky.social for putting this together!!! pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....
pubs.acs.org
Host Pathogen Interactions during Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections
As a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) present a unique challenge due to the high prevalence of multidrug-resistant and polymicrobial pathogens. Distinct from uncomplicated UTIs, the insertion of a urinary catheter provokes tissue damage that triggers inflammation, plasma extravasation, and the deposition of host fibrinogen. This inflammatory response drives the robust recruitment of immune cells and plasma extravasation, leading to the accumulation of fibrinogen─a key coagulation protein─on the device and bladder epithelium. This fibrinogen-rich environment creates a unique niche for intricate host–pathogen interactions. Crucially, uropathogens exploit these deposits to establish persistent biofilms, while the protein scaffold simultaneously modulates host immunity. Understanding these mechanisms, particularly the role of fibrinogen-binding adhesins, is vital for developing targeted, antimicrobial-sparing therapeutics. In this perspective, we examine the strategies uropathogens employ to persist in the catheterized bladder, the corresponding host immune response, and emerging strategies to prevent CAUTI.

We are current investigating Shigella cases linked to travel to Cape Verde. Regular handwashing with soap and water (especially after the toilet, changing nappies, and before handling food) is the best way to prevent the bacteria from spreading.
Gauri Godbole
Deputy Director, Gastrointestinal Infections at UKHSA, said:
“We’re investigating a number of Shigella cases in the UK. Most people affected had travelled to Cape Verde, mainly staying at hotels in the Santa Maria and Boa Vista areas.
Shigella can cause watery and bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps and fever. It can be caught from contaminated food or water, often linked to overseas travel, but can also be transmitted during and after sex.”

Shigella was the leading cause of diarrheal disease during World War One; and more than 100 years later, it continues to cause approximately 200 million cases and 216,000 deaths per year around the globe. Shigella is a leading cause of moderate to severe diarrhea in children less than five years of age in low- and middle-income nations, and significant disease occurs throughout Europe and North America due to sexual transmission, food borne and water borne outbreaks, and high incidence in homeless populations. The lack of a licensed vaccine, coupled with alarming increases in antimicrobial resistance, has led the World Health Organization to declare Shigella a priority pathogen for which research into new therapeutics are urgently needed.
