Liquid-infused silicone catheters reduce fungal burden and inflammation in Candidozyma auris bladder infections | mSphere
This research addresses the critical public health challenge posed by the emergence of Candidozyma auris, elucidating its pathogenesis in the urinary tract, the second-most common yet understudied reservoir. Here, we find that C. auris exhibits plasticity in its ability to form biofilms in urine and cause uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) and catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs). Importantly, we show that our liquid-infused silicone (LIS) catheters effectively disrupt this cycle by reducing fungal burden, preventing systemic spread, and dampening the damaging host inflammatory response. This work establishes the urinary tract as a critical niche for systemic entry and provides a validated strategy for infection prevention. Urinary catheters make C. auris dangerous, but this liquid-infused silicone coating is fighting back.

Ever wonder what really goes down in the microscopic battleground of a catheter-associated UTI? 🦠⚔️ Our new review unpacks the Host-Pathogen Interactions during CAUTIs. Thank you, Kurt Kohler and Alyssa La Bella @alabella14.bsky.social for putting this together!!! pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....
pubs.acs.org
Host Pathogen Interactions during Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections
As a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) present a unique challenge due to the high prevalence of multidrug-resistant and polymicrobial pathogens. Distinct from uncomplicated UTIs, the insertion of a urinary catheter provokes tissue damage that triggers inflammation, plasma extravasation, and the deposition of host fibrinogen. This inflammatory response drives the robust recruitment of immune cells and plasma extravasation, leading to the accumulation of fibrinogen─a key coagulation protein─on the device and bladder epithelium. This fibrinogen-rich environment creates a unique niche for intricate host–pathogen interactions. Crucially, uropathogens exploit these deposits to establish persistent biofilms, while the protein scaffold simultaneously modulates host immunity. Understanding these mechanisms, particularly the role of fibrinogen-binding adhesins, is vital for developing targeted, antimicrobial-sparing therapeutics. In this perspective, we examine the strategies uropathogens employ to persist in the catheterized bladder, the corresponding host immune response, and emerging strategies to prevent CAUTI.

The Budke Lab in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee (http://jmbudke.github.io/) is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work on an NSF-funded project. This project is investigating morphological evolution in a phylogenetic context using moss plants as the experimental system.
The research responsibilities will include (1) assembling morphological datasets using the literature and herbarium specimens, (2) compiling DNA sequence datasets from publicly available resources and laboratory-based methods using herbarium specimens, and (3) combining these data to analyze the evolution of morphological structures across a phylogeny.
Opportunities will also be available to develop novel research questions focusing on the functional morphology, physiology, and evolution of the parent-offspring relationship in mosses. Supervising and mentoring undergraduate researchers in both the laboratory and herbarium will be required.
An additional aim of this project is to build awareness of and appreciation for plants and botanical natural history collections. As part of the team, the postdoc will participate in hands-on outreach events, such as Darwin Day. The postdoc will also co-lead a May-term course for undergraduate students on collections-based research.
Apply by 17 August 2025 for full consideration.
