But that's the thing: I don't believe that these people actually care about the ethics of AI personhood. It is because they know the robots aren't people that they feel safe wringing their hands over their personhood. Real people? Eh. They require stuff from you

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

I don't know that I've heard anyone claim that LLMs are better at finding security issues than humans. It's that they can be tasked full-time with finding them whereas humans are normally tasked first and foremost with creating value, and security as an afterthought.

This is a good example of the substitution myth in automation, applied to software workflows. Coactive work and the integration of various functions is different from the individual functions being doable in isolation.

Question! Does anyone know where I can find interviews or primary source documents with coal miners or oil patch workers (workers, specifically, not owners!) talking about how they think about climate change, and how it relates to their jobs? Denialism is fine: I'm trying to look at the rhetoric.

I can't drive with voice on at all, it's not how my brain processes information and it makes me an acutely worse driver. Verbal stimuli paralyzes my ability to make split-second decisions, and I think this is pretty common. Everyone drives differently, more options are better!

The pineal gland or parietal eye that regulates time related processes used to be on the outside of our head, sensing light, before evolving to sink back into our skulls where it's surrounded by darkness. It can still sense light, though. It just never gets the chance

Do you know of any large open-source elixir codebase? I'm talking in the ballpark of 200k, 300k LOC or more. I often need to test the performance of a change but I don't have a large enough codebase for the measurements to be representative of our user base.

A New Color (1/5🧵)
Page 1: A man is walking home, smoking a cigarette, being quietly trailed by a UFO above him. As he enters his apartment, two aliens watch from inside the ship. Alien 1, who has a large head, says, “that’s him. Let’s move.” Page 2: The man walks upstairs as the aliens watch from the entrance of the building. The man enters his apartment and greets his little dog. Suddenly there is a knock at the door.Page 3: he peers through his peephole, and sees the two aliens standing in the hallway. Alien 1 is holding a briefcase. From behind him, the voice of alien one: “don’t scream.” Page 4: The aliens are seated across the room on the man’s couch. Sadie is in her bed next to them. Alien 1 says, “you’re not in any danger. Have a seat.” The man looks at his dog and thinks, “sadie is unusually calm.” Alien 1: don’t scream, or it’s a problem.

I wrote an essay about why I'm done using AI for coding, even if it costs me my job and career: brettcodes.com/im-done-usin... The basic gist is: AI made me a worse, apathetic programmer. I think it's bad for humanity, the planet, and the craft of software engineering. And I'm done using it.
