The biggest victory here isnt even the bus lane itself. Its a victory over The Process: - make a committee - meet with The Groups - make a report - start a non-binding referendum - make a pilot - make a report - make a plan - deploy a few years later People are SICK of this.

Two panel comic. Panel 1: a bat hangs upside-down from a telephone line at sunset. The bat is in front of a billboard advertising the Florida Mega Jackpot, which is valued at $5,318,008 - represented with a digital ticker. Panel 2: the POV flips to the bat’s upside-down perspective, which makes the digital numbers look like they spell “BOOBIES”. The bat appears delighted.

Worth repeating that CTA is not the barrier to bus priority in Chicago, they are very much in favor. We need Mayor Johnson, CDOT, and alders to make it a priority!

INSANE aura
A black woman with cool sunglasses and a long black dress with a short jean jacket holds up a clipboard with important looking papers while explaining the history and architecture of somewhere in Morgan Park I think. On her other arm, she has a totebag with a graphic of a cool house printed on it. An older fella is holding a Victorian looking umbrella above her to shield her from the rain. The shiny tops of her boots peak out from under the hem of her long skirt and imo completes the look.

A small digger trying its hardest to dig out the Ever Given ship that has run aground. It says, “Structural Problem” on the giant Ever Given and, “Making different personal choices” on the tiny digger.

I don't really know how to navigate this tactfully because cars aren't great in general and EVs remain expensive, but through the power of paying attention, I've managed to notice that electricity costs are so much more stable than the cost of a fuel you buy constantly to set on fire.

Chicago has approximately the same number of traffic deaths every year as Oklahoma City had terrorist deaths in in 1995. 168 deaths => crash bollards on ever federal building in the country. ~100-150 deaths per year => we put up some flexiposts which get destroyed by the first plow.

Lukewarm take: I feel a lot of pessimism about the present is built on not realizing just how bad the past was. Like if you just read a book about poverty in a first-world country in the 1950s it's staggeringly worse than now.

this thread is why we don’t let mobs make laws. unfortunately, all good housing ideas still have to go before the village tribunal and be debated by the same kinds of people that would have burned the witch

When state legislators passed the People Over Parking Act (POPA) last fall, they intended to make it easier to build housing and open shops. But Chicago is set to write the law into its zoning code in the most cumbersome way possible. There’s a better way. citythatworks.substack.com/p/illinois-a...

Illinois already killed parking mandates. Chicago should finish the job.

This whole idea that we can simply green the status quo—swapping out ICE vehicles for electric or slapping solar panels on homes built in spawl development in former forests or farmland—and make real progress in the fight against climate change just ain't it.

You might think that good governance would look like letting more people live here to expand the tax base to provide better services with lower individual tax burdens. Not so! Good governance looks like inflating the home values of insane, racist property owners until the sun burns out

Enough with mayors who whine about “local control” We didn’t let school districts decide whether or not to ban phones in classrooms. We agreed it’s a big enough issue to take action at the state level & force compliance. The same is true with housing. It’s a statewide issue with a statewide fix.

I would settle for 4 lanes instead of 8, an average speed less than 20mph over the speed limit, and it not being the most deadly road in the city.
