Dolly Parton rose from poverty to stardom. She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school; she built hospitals & bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.

“In Dallas for the premier of '9 to 5', I had an uncanny experience, and on the plane home to Chicago I confessed it to Siskel: I had been granted a private half hour with Dolly Parton, and as we spoke I was filled with a strange ethereal grace. This was not spiritual, nor was it sexual. It was healing and comforting. Gene listened and said, "Roger, I felt the exact same thing during my interview with her." We looked at each other. What did this mean? Neither one of us ever felt that feeling again. From time to time we would refer to it in wonder.”

RIP Dolly Parton. Although known primarily as a singer, she was easily one of the greatest songwriters of all-time. Just how good was she? In 1973, Dolly wrote both “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” on the same goddamn day.

The weird thing isn't that people say they only "care about story." It's that people who know better increasingly insist that that's a view that exists in opposition to "aesthetics." Everybody thinks movies are just stories until they learn different. This isn't a debate, but people act like it is.

a tweet that says, "I'll say one more thing. I've spent the last two weeks interviewing movie watchers and one of the reasons they do not read critics is because they do not care about the things critics write about (cinematography, color, aesthetics, pacing)... all they care about is story!" quote tweeted by Richard Brody with this text: "These movie-watchers are mistaken: the story, as they experience it, depends almost entirely on all the elements they think they don't care about; all the more reason for critics to emphasize those elements and to make clear the connection (even the possible misunderstanding)."

He bought the Blazers to hold the city of Portland hostage for arena money and now he's telling all of his underlings to shittalk the city so he can move to Kansas City or something. Cut this shit out or the league will be held hostage by similar ghouls.

RIP to the incomparable Sam Neill

How long has it been since you've seen the original "Jurassic Park"?

SAM NEILL The last time I watched it in its totality was sitting beside Princess Di at Leicester Square at the London opening.
On the other side of me was my son Tim - he was 11 and completely swept away by it, but about the time the T-Rex turns up, Tim started to fart. And the draft was drifting across me to royalty! I spent the whole film in a muck sweat, thinking, "Princess Di is being exposed to the horrors of a little boy's fart, but she's going to think it's me. I am going to be subliminally blamed for my son's crimes, and I don't think she'll talk to me afterwards." But she was well brought up and never mentioned it.
JEFF GOLDBLUM I love that story, Sam.
I've heard him tell that a couple of times, and it's just amazing the lengths that he will go to still blame the boy.

First Place: Film Criticism – Dom Sinacola – Dom Sinacola – Portland Mercury

A decent critic can get you to read something about a film you’re unlikely to watch. But one as talented as Dom might actually compel you to stream it. And so I am about to check out “Train Dreams” despite his rather brilliant warning that “A work like this, which is about the connectedness of all living things, does not belong on Netflix, where any sense of community goes to die.”
