All inhabitants who have lived on their territory since time immemorial are loyal citizens of their country only to the degree to which it protects their basic human rights. The essence of a civic union is contained in precisely such protection. It should be recognized that the state is an external social organization designed only to protect the needs of its members.

I’m broken up about this news, obviously. This heinous revelation does not merely destroy an adoring relationship to an artist whose work mattered to me. It also forces several moral convictions I hold simultaneously into uncomfortable proximity. I believe victims of sexual violence deserve to be believed and protected. I believe nobody is owed forgiveness. I also believe human beings can change, that punishment and justice are not synonyms, that privacy still matters when wrongdoing has occurred, and that reducing a person permanently to the worst act of their life is incompatible with any serious commitment to rehabilitation. I refuse to solve the contradiction by sacrificing whichever principle happens to be inconvenient today, as so many online seem to.

On Jacob Geller
I'm aware of the rape allegations against Jacob Geller, as well as the fact that his name is on a court-ordered list of UNC students disciplined for sexual violence. I've hesitated on whether to post anything about it, because the victim hasn’t been identified and I don’t want to participate in a retraumatizing conversation against their wishes. At the same time, as someone who has collaborated with Jacob Geller, I do not want my silence to be taken as endorsement.

For my part, I did not know about this and I wish I had. What justice and repair look like in cases like these are for the victim to decide, and I do not know their wishes or what accountability processes, if any, took place. However, strictly on a personal level, I’m uncomfortable having collaborated with someone who has presented himself as a nonthreatening feminist without ever disclosing his history of sexual violence to me or any other colleagues I’ve spoken to. I have no intention of ever working with Geller again. Beyond that, the person this happened to ought to be the ultimate authority on what happens next, and how they wish to tell their story if at all.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

I recently watched a couple of the earliest episodes of Seinfeld out of curiosity (yes, I know the man himself is a schmuck), and I was hit with an odd nostalgia, despite having never seen the show before. It's a weird feeling, and I'm not 100% sure where it's coming from. Worth interrogating, imo.

problems of the .furry TLD: an essay on my dislike of this idea and the rhetoric behind it alyaza.neocities.org#dotfurry
there are a variety of problems—or, perhaps, just one big problem with many facets—that sour the concept and rhetoric behind the .furry TLD for me.

i would like to start with the fact that to speak of communities “forced to hop from platform to platform, bending to the whims of those seeking to profit from their engagement” and therefore assert the need for “digital sovereignty within our community” is to make a political statement. and yet for all the truth underlying this statement, the people behind the current .furry TLD do not seem to actually grapple with the politics that should follow from it—or even recognize that this is a political statement in the first place, requiring political interventions to fully realize. rather, it seems that the .furry TLD is being stewarded by a governing body with an with an essentially laissez-faire, apolitical attitude despite the fact that it also represents something that has potential to become load-bearing subcultural infrastructure.

this is a possibility that, frankly, should scare the shit out of all of us.

consider this question, for example: ‘digital sovereignty’ on whose terms? it is well and good to be a “community-rooted organization” or to be “for furries, by furries”—but what do these practically mean for the subculture and its participants? because here we are speaking of a project asked to represent the totality of our subculture while also holding a de facto natural monopoly and a de facto captive market. there can, for all intents and purposes, be only one .furry TLD stewarded by one governing organization—and this TLD and its governing organization consequently inherits an immense coercive and definitional power over what is and is not legitimized as ‘furry,’ whether it actively and consciously chooses to wield these powers or not. does this not seem like something whose governing body should be democratically and collectively accountable to the subculture? [...]more to the point, who deserves representation in the decision-making of this “community-rooted organization”—who actually falls under this slogan of “for furries, by furries”—and who pointedly does not? which aspects of ‘the community’ will actually have a place in .furry and its governance, and which will be deprioritized or cast aside? or will ‘the community’ even have a place or a say in the current and future governance of the TLD—will it instead be, as Jo Freeman might put it, a structure of “the strong [and] the lucky” who happened to move first?

what i am getting at here is that “apolitical” infrastructure and governance is a contradiction in terms. even supposing this was not the case, however, i would still completely reject the notion that either infrastructure or governance can remain “apolitical” when they also serve the role of gatekeeper—when they assume a place in our subculture where their decisions could, would, and in some respects already do exert influence over defining what is and is not subculturally legitimized—like a .furry TLD would and does. the .furry TLD, then, is a result of political choices. how it has structured itself and who it listens to is a political choice. and in fact, consequential political choices about the nature of our subculture—and about what or who we are willing to accept as within its bounds—are not only being made through its structure as we speak, but in some cases have already been made. these decisions, worse, are being made by a handful of actors who seem to not even realize they are effectively making such decisions on our collective behalf.case in point: i, personally, question the value of allowing “entities outside of our community” into the .furry TLD tent when so many of these entities are motivated by (and actively advancing) the very same profit-seeking rentier capitalism that is currently marginalizing our subculture in the first place! might we not be inviting the wolves into our henhouse with a decision like this, in the process subverting many of the benefits of having a TLD for ourselves? and yet it seems the question has already been settled for good: in the future, you or i will exist alongside them (and whatever consequences they bring with them), because the handful of people involved with the .furry TLD intend to allow outside entities on grounds of financial expedience.

more broadly, though, i think we must be incredibly wary of technological projects which—in this internet interregnum at least—fail to realize (much less name or consider) the social and political implications of their work, or the potential consequences of that work. we currently live in an ill-conceived technological regime which did not care to mull such questions—and the harm this (often willful) ignorance has caused in both online and offline spaces is almost impossible to overstate. this is not to imply, of course, that the .furry TLD could ever rise to a level of harm perpetrated by, say, Facebook or Elon Musk; but all the same, just because the .furry TLD is motivated by benevolence does not allow it to simply ignore these questions or avoid preempting their possible harms!individual benevolence, in any case, is no substitute for informed, collective decision-making and accountability; and this is certainly true with respect to speaking for and representing an entire, diverse subculture. if this is actually a project “for furries”—for ‘the community’—and its many interests, then it only seems fair for this asserted community to take an active role in the project's governance and affairs (rather than just retroactively and passively being offered a seat in the building).

i would finally note that in abdicating the level of power described here to a handful of actors who are largely unaccountable, we court future catastrophe and future regret. absent a structure which can be held collectively accountable we lose the ability to, in the words of Jo Freeman, "demand that those who do exercise power and influence be responsible for it"—and time and time again we see the consequences of losing this ability. if FurAffinity, for example, makes a bad editorial decision—as it has many times—there is no serious recourse except hoping something changes at the top. what will remedy our collective enclosure; our commodification; our exploitation is not simply changing who does these things from a non-furry to a furry—no, this can only come when we organize cooperative and democratic institutions, structured around communal participation and accountability and with a clear political vision for achieving and defending our subcultural interests as furries.

what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made

I would, in general, prefer it if legacy Jewish institutions condemned actual antisemitism even half as much as they condemn pro-Palestine activists (who, in general, are not being antisemitic to begin with), instead of actively making real antisemitism harder to talk about by muddying the waters.
