מיטל-נאכט יום טוב --- "Middle-Night of the Holiday" the second night of Sukkos as Yom Tov. The unique beauty and joy we get in the diaspora 🥰 גוט יום טוב, חג שמח! Git Yom Tov, Chag Sameach!

Stepping into Yom Tov Sukkos with a Lulav (palm branch), an Esrog (citron, one of the OG citrus fruits), 9 Hadassim (yes, 9 myrtle branches), and 2 Aravos (willow branches). The “Four Species” are one of my favorite holiday rituals.
A hand holds a freshly bound lulav bundle with palm, myrtle, and willow branches wrapped in a woven holder over a table prepared for Sukkot. A large yellow-green etrog rests beside it, surrounded by open Hebrew prayer books, a lulav box, packaging, and scissors.

Species 2 (Esrog/Etrog - Citron, one of the 4 OG citrus fruits) of 4 ✅️ Often considered the most "important" (more on that tomorrow), usually the most expensive one 🍋
A bright yellow etrog (citron), with a green'ish center, resting upright in cream-colored foam inside an open dark brown decorative box with gold Hebrew lettering, sitting on a white table with blue floral designs. on the box it says: "Floor's Esrogim. One of the most beautiful parts of my Yom Kippur came at the very end: N’eilah in Prospect Park. After a full day of prayer, mourning, remembrance, and community, a few dozen of us gathered as dusk slowly turned into night.
At night in Prospect Park, a group of people dressed mostly in white stand closely together in a line beneath dark trees. In the foreground, a person holds up a rainbow twisted candle, its bright flame illuminating nearby faces and clothing.

I will keep sharing about these 3 Yom Kippur meals, at least till more people outside Orthodoxy also embrace them 😉 And this year, for the first time, I am hosting a 5-course meal tomorrow afternoon! I truly think these meals change the mentality around the day.
A traditional Erev Yom Kippur meal set on a white tablecloth: a bowl of golden chicken soup with square High Holiday noodle flakes in the foreground, a hand holding a spoon, a large round sesame-topped challah with torn pieces behind it, and a small dish of honey. Two candles glow at the back of the table, with a glass of red wine at the side.

It came out of multiple customs. First, there is an old Ashkenazi custom NOT to eat braided challah on Friday night. Then there is a Kabbalistic custom to have 12 Challahs present on the Shabbos table. During the year, this Challah is eaten: Non braided loaf, with 10 balls on top.

One of my favorite unique Challah shapes of the year: For Shabbos Shuva (the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), my mom would make this kind of round Challah. Unbranded, and made of 12 individual Challah balls. It's a combination of a few customs, and I love a good mix 🤷‍♀️

Yesterday, well over 100 of us gathered at Marsha P Johnson State Park for Shofar to Abolish ICE: to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, sound shofar, do Tashlich, build community, and organize. Thoughts and prayers can be beautiful and powerful. But they are never enough on their own.

So yesterday, we prayed AND organized. We began with מִן־הַמֵּצַר קָרָאתִי יָהּ, עָנָנִי בַמֶּרְחָב יָהּ, moving from narrowness toward expansiveness. We sounded the shofar, sang We Rise, and Joshua Blaine led “No One Is Getting Left Behind This Time.”

A trans man in the UK has been banned in the workplace restrooms after he was forced to use the women's restrooms to comply with the new EHRC guidance. The women complained because he is visibly male and so they told him he can't use any bathroom.
A screenshot of a Reddit post from the r/LegalAdviceUK subreddit by user Dijstraanon, titled "FtM transgender facing two different issues at work? England."
The post text reads:
"Brother in law is trans FtM and presents fully as a man. He's now facing an impossible situation at work with his employer telling him that due to recent legislation he must use the toilet of his birth gender. BUT several female colleagues have raised a grievance about him using their gendered toilet.
His employer has told him that he cannot use the toilet while he is at work until they sort it out and cannot give him a timeframe to do so. They do [cut off] have disabled separate toilets.
In the mean time one of his female colleagues has accused him of sexual harassment because he was used their gendered toilet. His menstrual cycle meant he needed to use the toilet.
He's been with the employer for just over 5 years but only in this location for 18 months. The location is mainly male with just a handful of females, and his workshop only has male toilets.
I do not know how to support him and as he's not in a union there is no one to turn too right now."

“The angel appointed over the Mitzvah of blowing Shofar is also appointed over eating Chulent. So when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos and we eat Chulent, there’s no need to blow the shofar...” – Said in the name of my great(×5)-grandfather, Rebbe Meir of Premishlan (1783–1850).
Close-up of a printed Hebrew text quoting Rebbe Meir of Premishlan:

“The angel appointed over the mitzvah of blowing shofar is also appointed over chulent; therefore, when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos, there is no need to blow the shofar.”

Labor Day is a great reminder that if it were up to capital, corporations, or governments, there’d be no workers’ rights: No weekends. No safety protections. No sick days. No 40-hour workweek. No religious protections. Workers organizing won us all that. Labor organizing will win us a lot more!

New Mexico isn't even named after the modern country of Mexico, rather after the native Mexica people. This is ridiculous, xenophobic, but also just straight up stupid. Besides, not a president, nor the federal government in any capacity, have the authority or ability to rename a state.

Your brain on pro-genocide Zionism: Anti-Zionist Hasidic Rebbes are now "bad Jews." He all but calls the Satmar Rebbe antisemitic. This is what happens when you replace Judaism with Zionism. Antisemitism loses any meaning - which in turn puts Jews in danger from actual antisemitism.

Prophecy is, more than anything else, the ability for clear moral, historical, and just vision - especially during times when everything feels so cloudy. In that way Hannah Arendt Z"L was very much a prophet. This is what she wrote in 1944 (via @benlorber8.bsky.social):
[T]he Zionists, if they continue to ignore the Mediterranean people and watch out only for the big faraway powers, will appear only as their tools, the agents of foreign and hostile interests. Jews who know their own history should be aware that such a state of affairs will inevitably lead to a new wave of Jew-hatred; the antisemitism of tomorrow will assert that Jews not only profiteered from the presence of foreign big powers in that region but had actually plotted it and hence are guilty of the consequences...
