I am wondering if someone has written on the similarities between public reaction to nuclear power and AI. Both seem to be quite complex, capital-intensive technologies pushed by large institutions that have said capital and that tell us they have great promise. 1/2

This is Wednesday's solar eclipse. Photographed from lunar orbit.
Earth. In the top right foreground, the rugged lunar surface. Just above the lunar horizon is a dark splotch on Earth, situated around Greenland. That's the Moon's shadow—or a solar eclipse, when viewed from the centre of that shadow on Earth.

The Ceuta 'crisis' is just political fuckery from Morocco in retaliation for Sánchez' visit to Algeria in July. It's all related to the conflict in Western Sahara. It has nothing to do with Spain's enforcement of the EU's external border. Amazing how thin EU solidarity is on this issue.

In accordance with ancient tradition, our next Prime Minister is announced to the nation while standing between a furry and a man with a bin on his head.
A victorious Andy Burnham MP (24,937 votes), as the result of the Makerfield by-election is announced, flanked by defeated candidates Count Binface (a bloke in a vaguely sci-fi costume with a large bin for a helmet; 95 votes) and Robert Pownall (who is in a full body fox costume, holding a sign reading "Protect British Wildlife"; 18 votes). There are some other candidates there just out of shot but that's not important right now.

Good thread. This is also why an “apolitical” military is a terrible idea—all military activity is political, so declaring the military apolitical just frees them from having to consider political consequences.

Two often-conflated debates I think it's worth treating as separate are: 1) Can tariffs theoretically be used to achieve policy objectives? and 2) Are our current governments sufficiently strategic, skilled, informed, independent, incorruptible, and long-termist to use them that way?

What is demand starts turning down, though? Suddenly the logic flips: you want to pump as much as you can in the near future, while demand for your product is still strong. If you wait too long, you might never get to sell at all.

Statement by the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom on the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah
We are gravely concerned by the escalating violence in Lebanon and call for meaningful engagement by Israeli and Lebanese representatives to negotiate a sustainable political solution. We strongly support initiatives to facilitate talks and urge for immediate de-escalation.
Hezbollah's attacks on Israel and the targeting of civilians must cease and they must disarm. We condemn Hezbollah's decision to join Iran in hostilities, which further jeopardises regional peace and security.
We condemn attacks directed at civilians, civilian infrastructure, health workers and infrastructure, as well as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.
These actions are unacceptable, and we call on all parties to act in accordance with international humanitarian law.
A significant Israeli ground offensive would have devastating humanitarian consequences and could lead to a protracted conflict. It must be averted. The humanitarian situation in Lebanon, including ongoing mass displacement, is already deeply alarming.
We reiterate our call for the full implementation of
UNSC Resolution 1701 by all parties and support the efforts of the Government of Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah, prohibit Hezbollah's military activities, and curb their armed hostilities. We stand in solidarity with the Lebanese government and people,

[Scene is a GREGGS interior. A lone MAN, the only customer in the shop, is standing at counter]

MAN:
Please can I have a sausage roll.

2
GREGGS SHOP ASSISTANT:
Certainly sir

[She pulls a leaver on the panini machine and WOOSH the man disappears through a trapdoor].

Whoosh

3
[The MAN appears through a chute in an underground bunker. A voice from off-scene greets him]:

Welcome, friend

4
[We see the voice is of a military-looking resistance COMMANDER with a moustache]

COMMANDER:
You said "please can I have" instead of “can I get”…

So now you're one of us.

5
MAN:
W-where am I ...?

[We see him looking at a hi tech UNDERGROUND MILITARY BUNKER - it has resistance vibes, and has lots of screens with maps etc]

6
COMMANDER:
You've joined the resistance…

...against people saying things all American.

7
COMMANDER:
We are an underground network of sleeper agents poised to have a right go at young people the moment they say "mom" or "bangs”.

8
LIEUTENANT [Staring at screen]:
Agent 244 has just given a Zoomer in Halifax the “could/couldn't care less" speech, sir

COMMANDER:
Very good

9
[Show the map of the UK with digital pop ups on it saying ‘GOTTEN’, ‘ZEE’, ‘MATH’ etc

COMMANDER:
You may have heard our name... We are...

10
COMMANDER:
...the Fight Against New Yankee Pronunciations and Americanisms Corrupting the King's English!

11
[Show the military command center panel. It says on the wall in big metal letters]:

F.A.N.Y.P.A.C.K.E.

12
MAN
You've called yourselves the 'Fanny Pack'

COMMANDER:
