European political elites need to understand that if they say European security isn't possible without the US, they are actually saying that European security isn't possible. For many reasons, they don't want to accept that, but they urgently need to.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

Another way of looking at this is that PHEVs are largely a waste of space. If you can afford a new or nearly-new car (and especially if you can charge at home) choose an EV with a good charging speed. @electricfelix.eurosky.social www.theguardian.com/environment/...

This is a low key tragedy. A broad consensus torched by a handful of ideologues and opportunists who do not even understand what net zero target is and why it was adopted. The reality is temperatures will continue to spiral until we reach net zero or civilisation collapses, whichever comes first.

High-mileage electric cars are more reliable than petrol ones, study finds
EVs with 90,000 to 120,000 miles on the clock are more likely to pass MOTs than petrol models of the same age Motorists buying a secondhand car with a lot of miles on the clock are likely to find an electric vehicle (EV) ultimately more reliable than a petrol vehicle, according to a study. An analysis of 47.4m MOT tests found that after cars were driven 90,000 to 120,000 miles, EVs were about 25% less likely to fail than petrol models of the same age (based on a failure rate of 16.5% versus 22.1%). HOLY SHIT NEW IMPACT CRATER ON THE MOON This crater is 222 m (728 ft) across, and formed in spring 2024. Statistical modelling tells us this is a 1-in-132 year event. So the last time a crater this big formed on the Moon was 1894.
A large crater with bright rays is situated in the centre of this image. The dark, pockmarked lunar surface makes up the background.

A constant for "populist" (or rather fascist) political parties across the board is their ability to gather the votes of those who have not previously voted, feel hostility towards the political system as a whole and are generally uninformed about politics and political parties and their agendas.

2) and 3) are intimately linked, in that the BBC (the organisation that really matters in the modern environment) treats 'claims by rival parties' as the operating frame for how it covers everything. The failure from Labour and the Conservatives to say 'this stuff is bad' is really, really bad.

Fact for those arguing with grandad/ma. "Our research illustrates this vividly. When we recreated the atmospheric conditions of the 1976 UK heatwave under today’s climate, peak temperatures were around 3-4°C higher. The weather pattern was the same; the climate in which it occurred had changed."
theconversation.com
‘Was this heatwave caused by climate change?’ – we’re asking the wrong question
Instead of asking whether climate change caused a heatwave, we should ask how much hotter it became because of fossil fuel emissions.
