The training and methods you need to handle oral material collected in the nineteenth, twentieth, or even twenty-first centuries are not the same that you need to work with texts written in the twelfth or fifteenth century, even if those sources sometimes share characters.

Just to be SO clear: it frustrates me when terms like "folklore" are used imprecisely not because I think folklore is "lesser" than medieval literature, but because I respect the work that actual folklorists do and *know that I am not doing it*.
