Globally around 75% of new demand has been met by clean energy since 2005, with 99% being met by solar and wind in 2025. The globe may be on the brink of absolute emissions reductions in the power sector, with clean energy growing faster than demand.

This iconic photo of Bertie Ahern in the Tolka flood waters in 2002, was taken by Colin Keegan, who died in traffic collision last Saturday. Colin was kind enough to let us use the photo for free in the first postcard campaign I ran in @foeireland.bsky.social in 2005. May he rest in peace.

Pleeeeeeeaaaaaaase tell me that all those "you should need a government ID to access the internet" people are rethinking this position now. [We know they aren't. Ed.]
The first two paragraphs of the linked-to story:

"Denmark has suffered a major data breach that has given unauthorised individuals access to names, addresses and personal identification numbers belonging to about 8.8 million people registered in the country’s central population database.

"The breach occurred after unidentified individuals misused a private Danish company’s legitimate access to search the Central Person Register (CPR), the government said in a statement Monday."

Let's see that breach-response process kick-in that they built into the system as part of their Data Protection by Design and by Default practices. [We know they don't have one. Ed.]
Another portion from the article:

"The CPR system is a cornerstone of Denmark’s highly digitised public sector. Every resident is assigned a unique 10-digit CPR number that is widely used to identify individuals when dealing with government agencies, banks and healthcare providers. While Denmark has a population of about six million, the register contains records on roughly 11 million people, including those who have died or moved abroad."

🚨 Half of all new cars registered in Ireland in September were fully electric (49.3%)! Car sales here are concentrated in January and July, so a single month is misleading, but I pulled out the BEV sales share for July-September sales for the past years: 2024 - 14% 2025 - 22% 2025 - 35% 📈↗️👆‼️

I don't think I could survive this. I'd have to change my name. Flee the country.
Irish times headline which reads:
Dear Éanna, have I spotted a penguin in Portmarnock?

There is an accompanying picker of a back and white bird standing in the part of a sandy beach where the water is washing over it The question sent in: I spotted this bird on Portmarnock shores in mid-September. By any chance is this a South African penguin?

The reply:
Ah now. Penguins are flightless birds that only live in the southern hemisphere. They are indeed excellent swimmers, but there is no way that a penguin could swim more than 20,000km, cross the equator and turn up on a beach in Portmarnock

A collection of frogs for you in these trying times.
Five digital drawings of "frogs". One is inspired by an Ouroboros, another seems to have a carved turnip for a head, one is a somewhat scrungly witch, another wears a flowery shirt while drinking from a coconut, and finally one of them is "Bimble". Bimble looks like if a rock tried very hard to be a frog and almost succeeded.

Irish solar farm growth, 2019 through September 2026. All growth in recent years is in the ROI. The fleet expanded a lot this year, and has headed west: the island's second largest solar farm is now in County Galway. The newest? Monvallet in County Louth which powered up during September. 📊 ☀️ ☘️

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

migpae
8 panel comic

P1: a lil' magpie (European flavour) bounces in from panel left. Above them, all lower cpas text reads "hrappy greet, i is cheaky migpae"

P2: we are now looking at a metal rubbish bin, lid propped up agianst it. It is full to the brim with stinking mulch, flies flitting about it. It is in an area enclosed by a low brick wall, up against its inside corner.

P3: the magpie peeks out from behind the bin, looking up with open-beaked amazement at what they have found. "bringo"

P4: A closeup on the magpie, as they quickly flap up to land on the lip of the bin.

"teh fetherles ones leeve such delishhs treshurs"

P5: the view pans back, as the magpie beholds the mulch, colour of barf.

P6: closeup again on the magpie, as they rapidly bury their beak in the mulch with a sickening "SPLUTCH"

P5: The magpie tilts their head back, their beak absolutely stuffed to bursting point with something that is not quite solid, but not quite fluid either. The joy is emperor palpable in their eyes.

P6: we end on a serene looking scene, as we pan right back to reveal the magpie, bin, and low wall are backed by verdant trees, and a mountain pink the same pink as the morning sky.

the magpie plays us out with "lief is gud"

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples
