🚨Today, EU ambassadors approved the Council’s position on speeding up environmental assessments. Fast-tracking permits for “strategic” projects risks rushed assessments and public consultation. Now it's time for MEPs to stand up for environmental rules that protect people, communities and nature.

Ireland Thinks asked people how big a difference EU policy can make to issues. Environmental issues came out strongly with 68% saying it makes quite a difference or very big difference to protecting nature & water quality, 61% saying the same for reducing climate & air pollution bit.ly/EP050626

More than three quarters of people say the introduction of a new EU-wide windfall tax on the excess profits of energy companies should be a priority for Ireland’s EU Presidency. 7 in 10 people say reducing our dependence on fossil fuel energy should be a priority. Full poll results: bit.ly/EP050626

To mark World Environment Day, we asked Ireland Thinks to measure public opinion on the EU’s role in environmental protection. 8 in 10 Irish people think the Govt should use its upcoming Presidency of the EU to strengthen or uphold EU environmental protections. Only 1 in 8 people want them weakened.

This is a dark day for the environmental movement. In one of most regressive moves I've seen by this Government, they are effectively shutting down the majority of environmental public interest litigation. Over 1400 people told them not to do this. Did they listen? Of course not.

Wow. An honest review of an SUV. www.irishtimes.com/motors/revie...
For the rest of us? We need to stop. Not only does the International Council on Clean Climate (ICCC) reckon that the extra weight and bulk of SUVs outmatches the gains in efficiency we’ve made with improved petrol engines and electric power, but more recently Imperial College London has released a study that shows you’re 44 per cent more likely to die if you’re struck by an SUV as opposed to a more conventional saloon, hatchback or estate. For children, chillingly, that figure rises to 130 per cent. I’ve been known to soften my SUV stance in the face of examples that are charming, or stylish, or notably comfortable, practical or good to drive, but those figures are enough to make any potential SUV purchaser blanch at the prospect. Or, at least, they ought to.
