meanwhile, the report also notes issues with officer retention following these bonuses, and i would love to get chief john clair's perspective on shon barnes' collective bonuses as he fucks off to AZ
Recruitment Incentives
Have Only Limited Benefits
Agencies shared that while financial incentives are
well intentioned and overwhelmingly appreciated
by incoming officers, overcoming their staffing
issues will take deeper, longer-term departmental
changes. According to Chief John Clair of the Town
of Marion (VA) Police Department:
“I challenge someone to produce objective
data, that any of the financial incentives are
truly working. The money we throw around
just keeps on adding up. I think if we offered
a 20k bonus, we’d immediately get lateral
transfers, who’d quit a year later. I won’t say
I don’t believe in a certain level of financial
incentives. . . . I just don’t think we need
large bonuses.”

so do hiring bonuses for lateral hires work? well, maybe, for a while downsides include creating a sort of race with neighboring cities to hire officers away from each other (relevant during seattle's budget season!):
Cost. Representatives of agencies that have pursued officers from other agencies surmised that this
strategy is unsustainable, since agencies will have
to continuously raise bonuses to out-compete each
other. At some point the bubble will burst.

i gotta say, this seems bad also note that seattle's lateral hiring bonus appears to be right on the bleeding edge of what PDs are offering as hiring bonuses - in a recruiting environment that one expert describes as "off the rails"
Strategies to Attract Lateral Hires
Just over half (52 percent) of survey respondents
shared that their agency is specifically trying to hire
officers from other agencies. Agencies with staffing shortages have paid lateral transfers sign-on
bonuses of up to $30,000. Some agencies said they
adopted this strategy out of desperation to address
the current staffing crisis.
Strategies to “swipe” officers from other agencies have become blatant. Some agencies have
targeted officers from specific jurisdictions by
geofencing around locations they frequent, such as
gyms. As Chief Marcus Jones of the Montgomery
County (MD) Police Department noted:
“We found an agency that was geofencing
around our district police stations, highlighting folks’ cellphones and social media outlets
to advertise for hiring existing officers from
our department.”
Other agencies have sent recruiters to job fairs
located in neighboring agencies’ jurisdictions. Most
concerning is the swiping of new officers directly
from the academy, after another agency has trained
them. Director Erik Bourgerie of the Colorado
Peace Officer Standards & Training shared that:
“It really does seem like the norms we would
use for recruiting have gone off the rails. One
of the big complaints I’m getting from agency
heads from across the state is agencies poaching recruits out of the academy.”

i mean here's tim burgess just straight-up dismissing data because he doesn't like what it says
text: 59 ofthe respondents answered the open-response question, "Why do you want to be a Seattle Police
Officer?". Their reasons varied from improving public safety, location, opportunity, salary, benefits,
serving their local community, helping others, family connection, retirement potential, training options,
the equality programs offered, and a love for Seattle.. Another analysis could be done to provide a deeper
dive into motivations of becoming a Seattle Police Officer.

burgess: This is quite a leap, in my view.
The "halo" effect in this type of research can be very
strong, especially if the respondent believes a truthful
answer will make them look bad. Or, in this case,
greedy. How do you know that the respondents didn't
include incentives when they mentioned salary and
benefits? I don’t believe you can conclude from this
that the incentives were not an attraction.

Ahead of the 2027 legislative session, the talk among many lawmakers is that since so much political capital was expended this year on an income tax that won’t bring in revenue until 2029, Washingtonians should be ready to see an ‘all cuts’ budget. If that happens, we will have learned nothing.

In the labor strife of the last few months, we see the clear impact of the two austerity budgets generated by the Wash. State Legislature in 2025-2026. Ferry worker sickouts; state employee walkouts; picketing by teachers and college staff: Each are consequences of deep cuts to state services.

There's also whatever point this person is trying to make. Parking really creates interesting conversations.
screenshot:

yes, and since they are graduates of a university urban studies program that has no appeal to private employers or women they live alone and work for government, and don’t understand the three fundamental things that drive society and “urbanism”:

1. Women are always afraid. Just look at the Cornell story. Night can be terrifying. That rules out transit and bikes.

2. Women buy everything in America. Hence all retail caters to them. I am a successful lawyer and in 35 years I’ve never bought my own underwear. It just magically appears in my drawer. I had no input on the zillions of disposable diapers we bought. Or any other product. My very expensive refrigerator is filled with Asian condiments I have never heard of. I do clean the litter box though. But don’t buy the litter.

3. If you are a straight guy you need women, and a good woman is good for you, and they tend to dictate how you live and where, and you are not getting one of the superstar women living in a shared wall apartment in an urban city taking her on a date on a bus. Ferraris are a dime a dozen. A quality wife is priceless.

If you didn’t learn that in HS as a guy you are stupid or gay.

So that’s it. You tricked a great girl way out of your league to marry you when you had nothing, you are living on a houseboat on Lake Union in Seattle, the two blue lines on the strip she peed on means your life has fundamentally changed, and next thing you know you are in suburbia doing the gardening. And driving a car.
