Remembering Gwyneth Bebb today. She passed Oxford law finals with first class marks in 1913, but was refused a degree. The CA rejected her claim to become a solicitor, saying only men were "persons" within the legislation. In 1920 she finally became a Bar student. But died in childbirth in 1921.
Screenshot of a Facebook post recording the fact that on this day in 1920, women were awarded Oxford degrees for the first time. Image of graduating women.

I published a piece on The Conversation today on legislated nursing ratios. Results in decreased mortality, complications, readmission, length of stay, and burnout in nurses, and better job satisfaction. Savings cover twice the cost of extra nurses. #nzpol theconversation.com/nzs-nursing-...

NZ’s nursing squeeze is an election issue. Is it time for compulsory patient ratios?
A new study linking lower nurse staffing on surgical wards with higher rates of post-operative deaths has raised urgent new questions about NZ’s settings.

Going on a little holiday in a few weeks, and I just booked in a plasma donation for while I'm near a bigger donor center. The NZ Blood Service is calling for 25,000 plasma donations before the end of November. So if you're in, or going to be in a major center, see if it's for you here:

This is what you get when private equity gets involved. Sanford World Clinic owns 15% of Omnihealth, who owns Tararua Health Group, who owns Pahiatua Med Centre. 6 nurses resigned yesterday from Pahiatua and 81 staff have resigned from the Tararua Health Group in the last two years.

Many centuries ago, people would boil down cattle hide, pig bones, fish scales and chicken gristle to make a paste that women would smear onto their faces, believing it contained the elixir of eternal youth. Oh sorry - that’s TODAY! Watch out for the collagen peddlers!

They're right you know
Post from Shaneel Lal

“ This is classic ruling-class politics: divide working people along the lines of identity so they never look up at the people actually causing harm.

Who’s taking your jobs? “The immigrants,” they say, while the government cuts 10,000 jobs.

Who’s harming women and girls? “Transgender people,” they say, while they strip pay equity from women-dominated professions.

Who’s taking the land and housing? “Māori,” they say, while they hand tax cuts and wealth to landlords and the wealthy.

Working people are being turned against one another while those in power continue to profit.

We need solidarity across our communities because if we allow ourselves to be divided by race, gender, sexuality, or identity, this government and the ruling class will pick us apart until all of us are left worse off.”

A black-and-white photo shows Dr. Leila Denmark (center), an elderly woman with glasses, seated and smiling while looking at a baby who is laughing and facing her. Another younger woman is also seated to the right, laughing and placing her hand near the baby's midsection. The scene suggests a warm, inter-generational interaction, possibly in a clinical or home setting.
