Counterpoint: the endless finicky journal-specific formatting requirements for source data are a massive administrative burden passed to authors at journals that charge thousands of dollars in "processing" fees.

With more manuscripts entering the system: 1) It is increasingly challenging to find willing reviewers, 2) The quality of the reviews is declining 3) People are looking for shortcuts to get more of these reviews done, as we are all receiving more review requests than ever

There is not an endless supply of peer reviewers with an endless supply of hours. People's time, generosity, and willingness to participate in unpaid labor are finite resources for our field. The more manuscripts we pump into the peer review system, the work we create for reviewers.

I just read an article about someone who published 200 papers last year, with the help of generative AI. Nevermind the qualms I have about the use of ARTIFICIAL intelligence to generate academic knowledge; that likely means that thousands of hours went into finding reviewers/reviewing that work.

To close: it's crazy to worry about profit motive in author COI declarations, but not journal editing itself. The damage this was causing was apparent before AI. The power to enact change lies with funders. Funders can use the same mechanisms they already use to support non-profit journals. 14/14

That comes down to career reward structures. Obsessing on N_papers as evidence of productivity is toxic. The game has always been prestige vs. quantity, now taken to an extreme by journal growth offering indefinite quantity. The utility of papers is secondary when there's money to be made. 3/n

The strain on peer review is due to our obsession of submitting *everything* to a journal and requiring PRE-PUBLICATION peer review of it before it's deemed "mature science." The problem with peer review is that no one can accept we have to stop pre-publication reviewing as default. 2/n

Panel 1: two Tiktaaliks (an extinct, 375-million-year-old fish that was the evolutionary link between fish and the first four-legged land animals) sit at the floor of a shallow sea bed. One of them angrily says to the other, “hey! You still owe me 20 bucks!” Panel 2: the other Tiktaalik, to avoid paying $20, emerges from the water and steps onto land for the first time in history.
