I wasn't this mom, but I am a mom who rides a cargo bike on Greenwood daily. So I say with confidence: With some work (and loss of some parking, quelle horreur), a two-way protected bike lane from 87th and Greenwood to the Fremont bridge would fundamentally change how we move around in NW Seattle.

I will take any opportunity I get to point people to Saunders's essay "Thank You, Esther Forbes," which has been a crucial guiding piece for my adult writing and editing life; I'd say thematically it's relevant here.

Kevin Hearne: How do we incentivize people to paint wizards on their vans again

I haven't seen a wizard van in a decade and it feels like we lost something precious

Can we offer up a tax credit?

Little bags of shrooms?

Start a wizard van painting program at vocational schools?

The BEST part of getting old (and there are many) is that you can ABSOLUTELY miss something wildly popular. Zooshas just flying by while you’re admiring someone’s sensible shoes or whatever. Bliss.

"democratize access to literary analysis" Yes, writers and scholars are famous for constantly scrambling to keep their work away from the prying eyes of the public.
Are you a literature expert eager to shape the future of AI? Large-scale language models are evolving from simple conversational tools into systems capable of analyzing texts, interpreting themes, and supporting literary scholarship. With high-quality training data, tomorrow's AI can help democratize access to literary analysis, support education, and deepen understanding of world literature. That training data begins with you—we need your expertise to help power the next generation of AI.

We're looking for literature specialists and avid readers with strong familiarity in areas such as classical literature, modern and contemporary fiction, poetry, drama, literary theory, comparative literature, and critical analysis. You'll challenge advanced language models on topics such as thematic interpretation, narrative structure, authorial style, symbolism, historical context, genre conventions, and close reading—documenting failure modes so we can strengthen model reasoning and interpretive accuracy. On a typical day, you will engage the model with literary passages, analytical questions, and interpretation tasks; verify factual accuracy and coherence; evaluate the depth and validity of literary analysis; capture reproducible error traces; and provide structured feedback to improve prompts, evaluation criteria, and reasoning quality.

A degree in literature, English, comparative literature, or a related humanities field is preferred but not required. Teaching experience, academic research, editorial work, or extensive reading and writing experience are all valuable indicators of fit. Clear, metacognitive communication—explicitly articulating reasoning and interpretive steps ("showing your work")—is essential.

Ready to turn your literature expertise into the knowledge foundation for tomorrow's AI? Apply today and help train systems that support readers, students, and scholars around the world.

We offer a pay range of $6 to $65 per hour, with the exact rate determined after evaluating your experience, expertise, and geographic location. Final offer amounts may vary from the pay range listed above. As a contractor you'll supply a secure computer and high-speed internet; company-sponsored benefits such as health insurance and PTO do not apply.

This isn't some new wheel to be invented. You definitely don't need "AI" to code a website that aggregates publicly available data. You might be able to do it ~faster~, but I guess we'll see how secure that backend is.

You can also apparently enter your personal collections into the state fair, because the last thing I saw before I left this building was some guy's Trek collection. Including a Tom Paris (and others) commemorative plate!
Me, a blonde white woman in jeans, a white fleece, and a blue raincoat, throwing up a LLAP next to an impressive collection of Star Trek paraphernalia in a glass case. Romulan ale, Klingon blood wine, Saurian brandy, James T. Kirk bourbon Commemorative plates and mugs!! The plates group characters by job; the first is security officers (Chekov, Yar, Odo, Tuvok), the second is helm, I guess? (Sulu, Data, Paris, and Worf for some reason?), the third is doctors (McCoy, Crusher, Bashir, EMH), the fourth is presumably captains (Kirk, Sisko's ear [the rest of him is obscured by the doctor plate], Janeway).

My neighborhood Mission bar/restaurant that I've been going to for 20+ years has replaced their coloring page kids' menu & crayons with this. I'll be sending a strongly worded email to management, which is frankly more punk than this nonsense.
AI slop illustration of a (shudder) "punk rock cantina" with a band playing on a stage, a car with flames, a...treasure trunk made out of studded leather, maybe?, a dumpster with a PUNKS DEAD poster and a little gremliny chupacabra peeking out. The band and the audience all appear to be white people, insofar as they appear to be people. The drummer seems to be non-existent, and the drum kit consists of a single bass drum fused to a PA stack. The title reads "HOW MANY CHUPACABRAS CAN YOU FIND? They're hiding in the punk rock cantina!"

There is no exact answer; there are at least 8 or 9 but several others seem to be phasing in and out of existence. Maybe it's a fey thing.

Discworld QOTD, from Men at Arms
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.
Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars.
Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.
But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

I don't remember this requirement during that one year earlier in the pandemic when the legislature funded meals statewide. Has this always been the case?
What Constitutes a Complete Meal?

To receive a free meal at no cost, students must select at least three of the five meal components (fruit, vegetable, grain, meat/meat alternate, milk), including at least ½ cup of fruits and/or vegetables. Meals that do not meet the USDA minimum meal requirements will be charged at à la carte pricing.

À La Carte Items

The following items are not included as part of the CEP or Universal Free Meal program and will be charged to the student’s meal account:

Second meals
Additional entrées
Additional side items (including milk)
Snacks
Beverages
Important Information

CEP Sites and Universal Free Meals benefits apply to students only.
Adults and visitors will continue to be charged according to the established meal pricing.

My favorite "Hold up, is that...Tim Curry??" voice-acting role is, of course, mad scientist Dr. Anton Sevarius from GARGOYLES, whose lab coat has short sleeves (?) and who at one point fakes his own death by electric eels
A cartoon still; a mad scientist with brown hair and light skin and an inexplicably short-sleeved lab coat writhes in a puddle of teal water spilled from a broken tank off screen. Four eels (several fish, not a guy) and bolts of electricity are wrapped around him.

One of the more obscure facts I remember about Dolly Parton is this: just like Star Trek would not exist without Lucille Ball, Buffy would not exist without Dolly Parton. She was a silent producer of the movie and show. That's why Buffy Summers has the same birthday as Dolly: January 19.
