Seen a lot of people responding to this with “I’m just going to pirate the show,” and I want to gently remind everyone that the central idea in this piece is that there’s no way to engage with the Potter franchise in any capacity that doesn’t benefit Rowling and her bigotry

if you watch it you tell WB to keep making more Potter stuff and you show them that directly funding JKR’s transphobia, that she LITERALLY uses to strip trans women’s rights away, is not a dealbreaker how could i ever feel safe around someone who buys her the boots she uses to step on my neck?

I keep thinking about the discourse from the other day suggesting writers are gatekeeping writing information for ourselves and I just think back to 2019 when every writer was out there giving away writing advice until one by one each stopped because social media blows and we can't have nice things.

I don’t know if this was always true, but it’s definitely true now The new Star Treks are a good example. Newcomers are more engaged on the level of “is this story compelling?” and the hard core have their first filter set at “does this even APPEAR to violate canon?”

Between the box office performance of Obsession and Backrooms (as well as several other recent films), it feels like something about American moviegoing tastes and habits are shifting very quickly in a way for which most of the people with the money to finance movies are completely unprepared.

One of my favorite parts of the script is the moment where we let Daisy Ridley rip Max Landis a new one to his face about his completely wrong "Mary Sue" criticism of Rey. This part was all @brianscully.bsky.social and it brought the house down when performed live by Elaine Loh! #MayThe4th
MAX LANDIS: She’s the literal definition of a Mary Sue! I’m gonna do a full rewrite to recontextualize that and make her more believable.

Daisy has just had her own character mansplained to her. She takes it well.

DAISY RIDLEY: Mister Landis, would you care to step outside?

EXT. PINEWOOD STUDIOS - SOUNDSTAGE DOOR - DAY

Daisy exits and goes along the side of the stage, Max right behind her. He’s in mid-sentence.

MAX LANDIS: --Dais, I get that there are girls everywhere, sorry, women everywhere who see Rey as fucking amazing, and they should, she is fucking amazing, but it doesn’t take away the fact that--

DAISY RIDLEY
(fuuuuuuck you):
With all due respect, you’ve had more than ample opportunity to speak. Now is my turn. And for god’s sake, stop fussing with your hair.

He does.

And when Daisy speaks, her words flow effortlessly. Each sentence precision. No hesitation. This is breathless.

DAISY RIDLEY: Rey is a scavenger. She has only known a life alone, abandoned on a desolate planet. To survive, she has had to teach herself everything. She’s been in the bowels of Star Destroyers, fighters, and ships her entire life, learning the mechanics, studying the components, because (MORE)Second page of script:

DAISY RIDLEY (CONT) ...proficiency was her only recourse. She has experimented with the older derelict ships on Jakku, she has reconstructed and piloted her own vehicles, and with all of that, she has a good learning curve when she pilots the Falcon, a ship she has already sat in and studied. She has a grasp of the technology because she has lived with it. Are you going to tell me that children building computers in their homes with self-taught skills are unbelievable?

MAX LANDIS: That--

DAISY RIDLEY (fuuuuuuuuuuck you): Excuse me. I’m not done. She is a young woman alone, left to fend for herself. She is emotionally broken, hiding herself from the pain of abandonment, convincing herself that one day she’ll be reunited, but unsure if she even has worth to this universe. The most potent struggles we have as characters and as human beings are the ones we have within ourselves. Rey is a wounded soul and hardly the perfect “Mary Sue” as you regard her. And her being alone means she’s forever vulnerable. She has chosen a staff as her defensive weapon of choice. Have you ever fought with a staff before?

(he opens his mouth)

Swinging a broomstick around in your garage is not an answer. Have you trained with a staff? Have you made it an extension of your body so that you have proper skill? There’s grace to staff fighting, but it’s a large and often unwieldy weapon. It is not a sword. Rey would therefore not use a lightsaber like a sword. Her first instinct would be to fight with a lightsaber as she would with a staff. Rey has lived with a melee weapon at her side. Finn has not. Finn knows only blasters. As shown (CONT)DAISY RIDLEY (CONT): ...more than once, when in a melee fight, he has a lot to learn. Perhaps these details escaped you in your viewing of the film.

MAX LANDIS: Okay, I think--

DAISY RIDLEY (fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you): Excuse me. I am not finished. As the original trilogy demonstrated, the Force is felt more intensely by some than it is in others. Luke Skywalker practices with a training droid for five minutes on the Falcon, and the next time he uses the Force, he’s nailing an impossible target that even computers could not calculate. His exposure to his connection to the Force was brief and perfunctory, yet it clearly had a monumental effect on him, as we learned how strongly the Force lived within him. How is it an absurd notion that Rey, when confronted with a powerful and disturbing Force vision, would be profoundly affected and begin to feel that perhaps the Force is in her and is stronger than anything she’s ever known? Perhaps you also missed the title of the film. The Force bloody Awakens.

MAX LANDIS: If I--

DAISY RIDLEY (FUCK YOU): I am not finished. I could continue dissecting your... positions. But, I need to return to work. Now, I can excuse the laziness you clearly displayed in viewing the film. I can forgive the wrongheaded sentiments you’ve formed about my character. But what I cannot let go is how vomitously you spew these things to a wide base of followers over whom you have significant influence. You provoke conversation, whether you like it (CONT)DAISY RIDLEY (CONT): ...or not -- and rest assured, Mister Landis, the planet knows you like it. And you do so without care as to the fires you light. But. Not every reckless thought in your mind is worthy of discussion. Least of all these.
(beat)
And if you ever call me “Dais” again, I will utterly fuck you up. Now I’m finished.

Daisy pivots and reenters the stage, just like that. As she walks, she takes a breath. The Daisy Ridley of propriety washing back over her.

When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment. As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.
