a month ago, I used gpt/opus to clean up a 1905 Edison-Bell cylinder recording. doing so was less sexy than what people are getting with fable/astra rn, but it was an interesting experience because my HITL role was basically reduced to “ears” spurgeon.computationaltheology.com/thomas-spurg...

The nearest thing to the voice of Charles Spurgeon: his son reading his father's last printed words into an Edison-Bell phonograph in 1905, restored and playable beside the original transfer.

there is going to be an impressive improvement in americans' health coincident roughly with kennedy being at hhs but attributable like 100% to glp-1s. it’s best to start coping with the painful inferences that will be drawn, asserted and accepted ahead of time

lines get blurred when you have to defend what is and is not science, and the infallibility of their respective clergy. but yea that’s patent anti-intellectualism animating a diseased host. not hard to spot or diagnose

what is your vision for a political movement that you would want to be part of; that doesn’t demand authoritarian measures to induce and maintain; and is realizable in the united states given our institutional structures?

Today: the North Shore Half-Marathon. I run it every year to mark my decline. This year: 1:47:30. 21 seconds slower than last year. Time marches on, but I'm making it drag its heels.

I feel like at this point, both the prophets of AI utopia like Ray Kurzweil, and of AI doom like Eliezer Yudkowsky, could be forgiven for asking: dude, will you listen to us YET? Do you still find it prudent to call this new form of terrestrial intelligence a stochastic parrot, a laughable fraud, or a fad that’s about to go away? Fear it all you want, hate it even, but at least respect it!

2026 orthodoxy is something like, > valuable software is now free or cheap to build so you should be mostly effort solving for distribution because thats how you win and i think it's very foolish.

i think on avg coding agents and LLMs do make people lazier, and do induce mental atrophy. I worry about it not infrequently. but i'm actually learning and exploring more computer science-y domains than ever before, because i don't have to spend 80% of my time on trivialities

ai is amazing because it allows you to go "what if dancing baby, but with particles spawned at high gradient values which have boids-like mechanics influenced by optical flow" and your computer shits out a gpu accelerated version in like an hour

I kind of think this is an important point to reiterate. It's never "rockets vs science." And sometimes (like with the Artemis II mission), there is science that can piggy-back on missions where enabling human spaceflight is the primary goal. The proposed science cuts are just about cutting science.

The anti-AI crowd on this website went from making good points against AI to being completely delusional and extremely toxic as AI spreads and the in-group/out-group mentality developed As Bluesky’s data is fully open, it would be a prime case study for scientists studying online toxicity

it’s always funny to me when people try to paint react as some kind of “big company” propaganda. it was like one person’s wild idea and then there was at most ~5 people maintaining it for years. people HATED it when fb open sourced it. the only reason it won is because the model was actually good
