being properly open-minded doesn’t mean shrugging every time you encounter a fucked up viewpoint and saying you guess it takes all kinds. it means interrogating the viewpoints you encounter and deciding whether they’re fucked up. being thoughtful and interested but ultimately making a firm call

Truly a classic performance in Used Cars. The guerrilla commercial is the most famous scene but this one always cracks me up.

Time to see ya later, The Strokes! IS THIS IT is very good and I understand why it’s beloved. I enjoy the songs whenever I hear them and I’ve seen the band twice and they killed it both times. But I think Jack White is brilliant and WHITE BLOOD CELLS still hits so hard for me. Bring on Wilco!

I’m the man who still loves this Wilco album as much as I did back then. Puts me in a great headspace even through the unrest at its core.

I can’t wait to read the NYT op-ed from Renee Good’s wife about grief on the one year anniversary of her death. Surely the NYT will extend the same grace to Becca Good—whose partner died protesting against state power—as it has to Erica Kirk—whose partner died defending white supremacy

System in a walk, which is not meant as a slight of Missy. Just not something I care about, vs. an album that blew me away at 20 and continues to be a favorite. Plus, as a therapist, whenever I see the phrase “psychomotor agitation” I hear it in Serj’s voice. “PSYCHO. MOTOR. AGI. TATION!”

while scrolling I saw a Space Ghost clip and it makes me think about one of my favorite bits from the show, the David Byrne interview and the line "We would all like to *do* something, David," which has lived in my head ever since

When people say they’re anti-AI, they’re clearly talking about generative AI in the arts and LLM slop that C-Suite jackoffs want to use to replace them. You know this. I know this. Everyone knows this. So the “then don’t use spellcheck if you hate AI” talking point is disingenuous horseshit.

I enjoy Le Tigre, but THE ARGUMENT is one of my favorite albums of all time. “Epic Problem,” “Life and Limb,” “Strangelight” and “Ex-Spectator” really show off the Fugazi spectrum. Gonna go put it on now!

fields. Instead, he apparently laced into the company. According to the Financial Times, Eggers told the staff:

“The effect of ChatGPT on educators’ lives is catastrophic. Whether you intended to do it or not, you’ve made every teacher’s life infinitely more difficult than it was two years ago. So, just let that settle in… If students are using it to compose, which is the biggest tragedy of all, they’ll never learn to write. And their voice is stolen from them. They’ll never have the ability to say their truth and tell their own story. And that’s silencing an entire generation or two.”

Despite three of the songs, reaching nearly Foo Fighters levels of radio saturation, TOXICITY still sounds fresh and exciting to me all this time later. Bonus point, at least at the time, because I had been a huge proponent of the first album before it popped up on the radio…

LATERALUS is my favorite Tool album and one of my favorite albums this year. They’re polarizing but I hope they can at least get through one round. Explosions in the Sky means less to me when it’s not tied to FNL or a Coachella set

“As a fuck, son, you sucked” is just a delightful sentence to say, and here you get to sing it repeatedly. Yeah Yeah Yeahs because this EP, like YOUNG LIARS from TV on the Radio a couple years later, is both great and had an outsized impact if you were on the ground level at the time.

AT DAWN is probably my 5th favorite MMJ album, but seeing them play “Phone Went West” at the Wiltern back when Jim James still had his voice was a transcendent experience. Respect to Ladytron, but MMJ mean something to me. (The less said about their recent albums, the better.)

I know there are people out there who love REVEAL, but for me this was still R.E.M.’s sleepy wilderness period. RINGS, on the other hand, is weird and challenging and hooky and funny and interesting. It’s easily in my Top 10 for the year. No contest for me.

Green Album was a colossal disappointment, and I never listen to more than half of it. But I still saw them twice on this tour and love 3-4 songs. Röyskopp isn’t my thing, so easy choice.

I once karaoked this entire Tenacious D album at a New Years Party. I’m sure you had to be at the right point in your life and have a similar sense of humor, but it hit for me and I still love it. Air is sleepytime music. Sometimes that’s what I want but usually not. Big advantage to The D.

A core early 20s album for me vs. Built to Spill’s perfectly enjoyable album between their two peaks, this one is an easy vote. ALL IS DREAM has populated many a mix CD and playlist and is the reason I think of them as a favorite despite not really caring about anything they’ve done in 20 years.
