Another good take by @brianbeutler.bsky.social...it reminds me of the importance of reading and understanding Hofstadter's Anti-intellectualism in American Life, which starts from the decline of McCarthyism... www.offmessage.net/p/republican...

What a joke. We are governed by performative morons. It provides zero confidence that AI in the military will be executed well. Hegseth is too busy yapping his gums and firing people (in order to mask his profound incompetence and insecurity). Good times. 🙁

These ads go in the same category as brazen, easily disproven lies after ICE killings. It’s not about persuasion. It’s a display of power. They could have passed them off as PAC-funded. They added “paid for by the U.S. government” because they want us to know they can break the law with impunity.

When the “censorship industrial complex” myth was just getting started, in Fall 2022, I got a public records request from the AG’s office of Missouri looking for all my emails related to my team’s election rumor research. The Missouri AG at that time? Eric Schmitt. What a tool.

Some good insights below. Even doing this second Jack Smith hearing ~6 weeks before the election seems RISKY and it signals that Trump still calls the shots. The entire GOP has no spine and/or they are too deep into Trump’s Kool-Aid to think straight anymore. Pathetic.

Aaron is not underrating this. It's cinema. The sly smirk when Schmitt thinks he's gotten Smith to perjure himself. The hasty vanishing of the sign. Klobuchar getting Kennedy to hold it up. Schmitt getting LOUD and ANGRY when Klobuchar points out he mixed up the Hawks and Hawkeyes.

Alex Karp is something to behold. Does he simply relish some form of World War III that is AI-centered and the US wins? I just saw Karp’s usual condescending and angry rant with Eamon Javers of CNBC in front of the White House; before AI leaders’ lunch with POTUS. #palantir

Once you notice this, it's the most obvious double standard in the political press. Democrats have to answer for the smallest voice even if it has no actual tie to them, but Republicans never have to answer for the insanely racist billionaire donor driving their entire party.

Here's the dramatic improvement of Republicans' opinion of Vladimir Putin in 2016. As with anti-Canada sentiment now, the unmistakable main cause of the change is Trump. I think of these examples when pundits claim politicians can't change public opinion so they must follow wherever it already is.

In no real sense is the academy, especially the elite academy, "radical." Sure, there are radicals here. But it hews close to its longstanding function as a machine of class reproduction. The supposedly radical elite academy churns out finance & tech bros (of all genders), lobbyists, nice doctors.

The capitulation of civil society organizations is perhaps the most important political story of 2025. For every 1000 pundit pieces on what Democrats need to do to win moderate voters, there is 1 piece on the politics of civil society--businesses, unions, congregations, universities, nonprofits, etc

This “median voter” information deficiency IMO is why it’s imperative if a Dem wins POTUS in 2028 that criminal prosecutions of Trump 2.0 be AGGRESSIVE. Dem POTUS must also “prosecute” these miscreants in public speeches in parallel to DOJ. It must be much more than an investigative committee.

“Declined to seek a security clearance” was simply not a thing before the One Special Boy. You didn’t have a choice about these things. The media did not write those words normalizing illegal things. And then we simply decided nothing - not laws, not norms, not the Constitution - mattered anymore.

That basic problem -- the problem of the information environment, which I've banged on about for 20+ years now -- is upstream of *everything* else. There's no simple fix. It's certainly not going to be fixed with clever word choice or policy proposals. You have to shift the deep mythologies.
