Nonprofit and government executive leading progress for people, nature, and climate. Often out on trails biking, running, or hiking, or on rivers, creeks, and lakes paddling, usually with my kiddo and spouse. Views are my own.

I wonder if these exoskeletons do or will qualify as tools for conviviality? Could enhance survival for those who are mobility-limited or in accidents (SAR), ensuring justice is a bit of a reach, and allowing people to do work they might not otherwise be able to do. arstechnica.com/science/2026...

A spokesperson for the Maryland Department of the Environment said in a statement Friday that inspectors estimate nearly 11,000 fish died across 25 species, with preliminary findings suggesting the die-off was caused by an overflow at a Kilby Farms manure lagoon. buff.ly/9z3DdQV

The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

I consider myself lucky to usually get to work out on the deck in the wee hours each morning, enjoying views like this. #stars #nightsky
Night sky with a few high clouds, the moon near the top left, and the silhouettes of trees framing the image. Orion and Sirius are both visible.

We are now, without a doubt, the greatest kleptocracy the world has ever known. By virtue of Donald Trump and the Republican Party promising to hate and abuse those people a nation of angry rubes wants to hate and abuse, they have lifted the national wallet and handed it back to the rubes, empty.

Another great one from @doctorow.pluralistic.net. A subject I'm working on lately: "A post-oligarch world can recover industrial capacity by diverting it away from destructive activity (data centers, luxury housing) to essential functions (climate defenses, decent housing for everyday people)." Yes!

Just 17 days after Bears Ears reopened to mining claims, 72 had been filed. 16 had been filed before noon on the first day. But, mining could still be years away due to permitting and other reasons.

Another good take by @brianbeutler.bsky.social...it reminds me of the importance of reading and understanding Hofstadter's Anti-intellectualism in American Life, which starts from the decline of McCarthyism... www.offmessage.net/p/republican...

This is a good article from @republiclands.bsky.social...I might pick up on it and frame through the lens of the new Senior Executive Service requirements, which would further underscore the Secretary's inadequacies. www.republic.land/if-doug-burg...

Early days in reading the permitting reform bill, and mostly it's not looking good. Yes, I want to enable faster and smart renewables build-out (distributed and resilient!) and other Good Things, but the Endangered Species Act, NEPA, and other cuts are just bad...as in, objectively not well-designed
