I did check out The Western Standard article just to see which riding it was - Calgary Buffalo. Downtown/beltline riding, fairly reliable NDP provincially last three elections. So not a "conservative" stronghold.

W ith just a few weeks to go before Alberta's refer-endum on separation, fresh polls indicate growing sup-port for those wanting no part of ripping the country apart.
One by Ipsos shows 70 per cent of Albertans want to remain in Canada, while 20 per cent are in favour of holding a binding referendum on separation. How-ever, if Alberta was to hold such a vote, only 14 per cent said they'd choose to leave.
Meantime, a new survey con-ducted by Janet Brown Opinion Research for CBC News showed 72 per cent of Albertans in fa-vour of remaining in Canada, versus 23 per cent in favour of
starting the legal process to hold a binding referendum on the question. That's down from 27 per cent in April.
None of these numbers come as a shock.
There has never been any widespread desire among Alber-tans to cut ties with their coun-try. Certainly, there has been some separatist sentiment that has taken root in rural parts of the province, especially among older males. But there has never been a groundswell of rage that has translated into a majority of Albertans wanting to leavede spite the best efforts of a succes sion of provincial leaders (espe-cially conservatives) to demon-ize the policies of any Liberal prime minister who has ever held office.
Recently, Premier Danielle Smith, speaking at an online fo-rum with former Reform Party leader Preston Manning, was overcome with emotion talking about how hurt and angry Alber-tans are over the horrible, ghast ly manner in which they have been treated by Ottawa over the years. It prompted her to wonder
at times: "Does this country ac-tually want us?"
Yet, a person intent on de-stroying the province's oil and gas industry couldn't have done a lousier job if they tried than former Liberal PM Justin Tru-deau.

My greatest frustrating has been with policy wonks who persist in thinking we can just keep doing normal policy analysis ("calling balls and strikes") in this situation. The President of the United States is both lawless and out of his mind. That preempts all normal discussion.

The Alberta chapter of the Canadian Bar Association has published an analysis of Premier Smith's nine referendum questions. They find that most of these proposals would invite immediate court challenges, and several of them are not legally clear at all.

There are up to 8,000 species of katydids in family Tettigoniidae, 255 in North America alone. But this hot pink katydid isn't some exotic species, it's a 'morph', a normal genetic color variant. Here's the weird part: this is the DOMINANT color gene in katydids. (📷: Audubon Zoo)
