This stuff also makes such a mockery of the people who did work very hard to get rid of the death penalty in blue states. Dems are not perfect, but they're generally moveable on these issues, and many Dems did move because people worked hard to make them move. Endless hopeless cynicism is useless.

There's 2 psychological benchmarks I'm hoping we can hit for the remain in Canada option in AB: 1. 70% for remain 2. Remain wins every provincial riding The first one seems pretty plausible. Not sure how likely the 2nd one is, but a full map of remain would be symbolically valuable.

A big problem with "AI safety" is that while big tech companies are spending hundreds of billions on trying to create the first AGI God; many other bad actors are spending small sums creating the AI equivalent of Shahed Drones. Cheap, quick effective ways to hobble key institutions.

It's not surprising that he's not forming a coalition. It's rare that coalitions happen in Canada, and Quebec has literally never had one. This alone doesn't mean the government will collapse quickly. But PSPP doesn't strike me as a smooth parliamentarian, and that will be a problem for him.

When I was in 2nd grade and first being taught how to read a passage and write a response to it; I wrote a response once that amounted to: "If you want to know the answer why don't you just read the story?" Little disturbing that this idea seems pervasive in people older than 2nd grade these days.

McGill gets a lot of the attention of the attacks on English universities in QC, but McGill has a lot of institutional weight to protect itself from the nonsense. Concordia provides crucial opportunities to many people and is much more vulnerable to this nonsense. It needs to be protected.

Big picture thing that strikes me in these YouGov polls. Almost everyone who dissaproves of Trump strongly disapproves. Somewhat disapprove barely registers. Meanwhile Trump approvers are much more split between strongly and somewhat.

One interesting tidbit from last night is that PSPP actually got a lower percentage in his own riding than he got in 2022. Although that was heavily assisted by the fact that the QS candidate against him dropped out in 22.

I was wrong about one thing last night. The PQ's 28% is not the lowest total for a party forming government in Canadian history. In 1919 the United Farmer's of Ontario won a plurality of seats despite only getting 21% of the vote, behind 25% for the Liberals and 34% for the Conservatives.
