Vitamin C deficiency can arise within a month of being on a diet that completely lacks it, scurvy can appear within only a few months. Depression is one of the mental illnesses that makes it very easy to accidentally simulate being on a long 18th century sailing voyage.

There are many reasons a person might end up having a diet resembling that of an 18th century sailor, and modern capitalism makes this very easy to happen.
