Progress is being made though. They had to completely rebuild my floor but I am now free of ominous creaks [and so is the floor etc ha ha]…
Bathroom renovations under way. Wooden battens now affixed to walls ready for plasterboard. While still no true right angles we are now much more rectangle adjacent!

Bathroom fitter has different apprentice with him today who has just had to be inducted into the mysteries of my odd shaped house. Lots of explanations of angles and where they will have to square off!!

The other end still has its floor at least! And a slightly precariously balanced loo. Still - needs must!
Other end of bathroom showing loo temporarily balanced on old tiles and exposed stone wall. The other walls looking relatively untouched for now!

Floors are overrated huh?
Gutted bathroom with exposed stone wall to the right, stud wall ahead and numerous floorboards removed to expose the joists at one end.

Last day of bathroom looking like this. Awaiting arrival of gang of men and a skip to commence the “worse before it gets better” phase. 😱
View of bathroom - dark grey marble effect walls, white basin, a white bath with shower above it, and a turquoise bathmat. Dark grey flooring. Photographer visible in the mirror! View of other end of bathroom - white toilet, radiator, one grey wall and two white ones with art on them as well as decorative vinyl seagull silhouettes. Rectangles of sampled paint in various shades. Stainless steel medicine cabinet on one wall.

A Comfortable Man!!
Billy the brown tabby cat is asleep on his back on the top shelf in the wardrobe. Only his tail and his back legs can be seen, with his pink and black beans high in the air.

Went for my flu jab (I get a free one due to an underlying health condition) at the surgery. They were running a special clinic so very high throughput. I did bring the average age in the waiting room down quite substantially though!! 😅

Today I am in 19th century Birmingham and researching the Library fire of 1879. I am learning a lot about 19th C disaster preparedness. However what everyone* wants to know is what was the “unpleasantness” which caused the resignation of the Librarian and which he promised would not be repeated?

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

A long few days at work with a somewhat late finish at the office tonight plus train journey home so took myself out for my tea and had an epic chicken pie!
Black ceramic plate on a scratched wooden pub table holding an enormous pile of buttery mash, an equally huge chicken and leek pie garnished with crispy onions, and a smalk white jug of gravy. In the background a glass of water and just out of shot a glass of nicely chilled Sauvignon blanc.

When was the last time our Secretary of State for Culture displayed anything approaching this degree of public enthusiasm for our world-class arts industry? Has she been seen anywhere? Given impending charter renewal... did she even bother to visit a single prom?

For Heritage Open Days I visited a textile printing factory. Some machines still steam-powered and they abstract water from the River Lune under “grandfather rights”. Really fascinating tour.
Pumping equipment which facilitates abstraction of water from the River Lune to provide the steam needed to run some of the machines. Saved during Storm Desmond by the engineers who shut off and physically moved the bespoke (and largely irreplaceable) pipework when they realised it was going to flood! Yard inside Standfast & Barracks factory compound. Arch at end supports huge water tank as steam power still in use. This bit of the factory dates from 1896 but current use as textile print works merely from 1924!

Adorable guerilla art in the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath.
2 water pipes are emerging from a wall, near the floor. Where the pipes have angled joints, someone has painted them with little faces. There is a gallery-style sign stuck to the wall beside them saying "Pipe Portraits, mixed media installation, artist unknown."

Autumn is officially here. A house spider the size of a small pony trotted jauntily across the living room floor between the front door and the kitchen, as I watched from the sofa. I swear I could hear its feet on the laminate.
