Books have certain belong to the time in a way that AI can't fill. Would a 1939 German allegory of a vicious despot that devastates his neighbors be the same or its opening advice count as much from a piece of silicon?

And yet everything precious comes to us by chance—the best in life costs nothing.

To be sure, straightening things out requires a broad-mindedness like Brother Otho’s. His fundamental principle was to treat everyone we met like a rare find made on a journey. He liked to call humans optimates, to indicate that they are all to be counted among the natural aristocracy of this world and that every single person has excellence to offer. He held them to be vessels of wonder and accorded them, as superior beings, the rights of princes. Indeed, I saw all those we came into contact with blossom like plants waking from hibernation—it was not that they became better, but that they became more truly themselves.

I know it pales in comparison with heading the Foreign Service in Austria Hungary during its adventurism in the Balkans and WW1, but I feel like Leopold Anton Johann Sigismund Josef Korsinus Ferdinand had too many names.

The wikipedia page of Leopold Anton Johann Sigismund Josef Korsinus Ferdinand Graf[a] Berchtold von und zu Ungarschitz, Frättling und Püllütz.

Dr. Oz is on my flight right now. He is sitting in the very first seat, front row. I saw him get on the plane. So when I stepped off the jetway onto the plane I approached him and put my hand out. What the man in charge of healthcare for the people on the very margins of society said…was revealing

I don't like the "Trump take BBQ". Not that they aren't funny, or partially true, but America has seen five decades of conservative denialism about the consequences of the fossil fuel economy. In short cattle are not economic in our increasingly arid west.

2/n: Banning diesel exports would *temporarily* provide some price relief for most of the country, but not for New England. Because pipelines don't run that far north, PADD 1A has to import large amounts of diesel, which means it's competing with a (structurally short diesel) Europe for barrels

We were looking for a place to get out of town and just zone out and randomly found his studio/house. it became our our go to spot for a few years. He was very cool to us.

Something I admire is how Judaism makes the holidays a time to reflect, apologize, and make amends to those that you hurt or offended. And it recognizes that some won't accept the apology, and provides a way to forgive yourself in that case. It's the sort of tradition we could all benefit from.

I love the chicken beat

Over the decades, officials have tried new things and learned what works best. For the first few years of the Delaware program, they used white leghorn chickens – but they proved, in Moran’s words, to be “very flighty”. They frequently tried to escape, running into the bushes and forests.

“It’s literally like a scene from Rocky, where you’re chasing the chicken around – you can’t catch these things,” Moran said. It would sometimes take an hour to track the chickens down. Once they switched to a breed of Rhode Island red chickens, their work went much more smoothly.

Welcome to the the NSA, Palantir, and Flock. A population with "no qualms about the invasion of their privacy by government agencies and data-processing organizations, and if anything welcomed these invisible intrusions, using them for their own purposes"

JG Ballard High-Rise.

A new social type was being created by the apartment building, a cool, unemotional personality impervious to the psychological pressures of high-rise life, with minimal needs for privacy, who thrived like an advanced species of machine in the neutral atmosphere. This was the sort of resident who was content to do nothing but sit in his over-priced apartment, watch television with the sound turned down, and wait for his neighbours to make a mistake.

Perhaps the recent incidents represented a last attempt by Wilder and the airline pilots to rebel against this unfolding logic? Sadly, they had little chance of success, precisely because their opponents were people who were content with their lives in the high-rise, who felt no particular objection to an impersonal steel and concrete landscape, no qualms about the invasion of their privacy by government agencies and data-processing organizations, and if anything welcomed these invisible intrusions, using them for their own purposes. These people were the first to master a new kind of late twentieth-century life. They thrived on the rapid turnover of acquaintances, the lack of involvement with others, and the total self-sufficiency of lives which, needing nothing, were never disappointed.
