My parents' friends actually own a second home there. … No, I think it's unjustifiable in a time of housing scarcity

The instant anyone mentions Dorset, my mind goes into unstoppable overdrive working out a way to ask a question to which someone will reply "In Dorset?", which I could then meaningfully answer as if they asked "Endorse it?". (And I will not hear another thing they say until I've cracked it)

I know I keep saying this, but Kemi Badenoch is the product of an environment where there are too few avenues where she is asked 'soft' but important follow-ups like 'okay, what are the essential public services?'

why not simply ban Amazon in that case :) if they can't obey simple rules then they shouldn't be allowed to operate in this country :)

Great Spearmint gig as ever. Really enjoyed the tracks from the new album and some treats from the back catalogue. Also got some new merch! Have a listen to the new album if you're curious spearmint.lnk.to/chaseme

Now it's doing them all, with explicit instructions not to stop until they're done – and I actually think it's going at exactly the same slow speed as a human scrolling through my document, selecting each heading and clicking the style palette on it would. Is Copilot… some guy in a low-wage country?

Grudgingly using Copilot to do a boring styling task across all the headings in a long document, and surprised by how it does a load of it, then stops to explain proudly how well it's done but that it hasn't done them all. You're not a toddler seeking praise after eating each vegetable! Finish them!

A lot of the lobbying has talked about how important it is for Heathrow to be a hub aiport, and it has never been adequately explained to me why this should matter to anyone who does not own Heathrow

Buses v cycling? A 🧵... Too often, the bus 'industry' defaults to attack cycling as cause of buses (in London) getting slower & slower. Good to see that somewhat countered here: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/ng-i... by @theguardian.com data team. 1. Bus speeds dropping is a "global problem"... 1/13

Oh you need all the relevant information combined into one image do you Thameslink? OK! Can't wait to find out if I'll get my £3.93
A photo grid collage of four parts:
1. My Gold Record Card for my Oyster season ticket.
2. My Oyster card journey history for today.
3. The details of the relevant journey from Oyster.
4. A screenshot of a load of text I wrote explaining my claim, which says:
• My annual Z1-2 travelcard is £1788.
• £1788 ÷ 464 = £3.85 per single journey.
• My delayed train ran from Zone 1 (London Bridge) to Zone 5 (East Croydon).
• The first part of my train was in Zones 1 and 2 and therefore worth £3.85.
• The second part of my train was outside my travelcard zones and was charged at £4, the Oyster PAYG fare for travelling through Zones 3/4/5.
• The total value of my journey was therefore £7.85
• It was delayed by over 30min
• I am therefore claiming £7.85 × 50% = £3.93

Who understands Delay Repay, Oyster and travelcards and wants to tell me how to claim for a Thameslink delay to a one-train journey which started with the two zones covered by my travelcard and ended with PAYG fare being charged for three zones not on my travelcard? 🫠

This year has seen the most Open House London planning I've done, at least insofar as, of the four weekend days, two that I'd fully planned out I ended up binning for various reasons and replanning from scratch. Good job visiting 20+ buildings in two weekends isn't tiring in any other way too, eh 🫠

Couldn't work out why there were no Lewisham to Victoria trains today, until I opened a section of @serailway.bsky.social's Engineering Works page titled "No trains via Swanley" and inexplicably found the Bexleyheath line, unrelated to Swanley, in there www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/travel-infor...

This doesn't really explain what the problem was, and of course it happened in a millisecond, how long does any little action a computer does take? Maybe it was caused by a request for a flight number from a plane named by Little Bobby Tables' mum from xkcd

This story is a perfect example of how broken reporting of the mobs roaming Britain's streets now is - and the political response. What would have been the appropriate response if this hadn't been a sports team? Trash the hotel? Force them out into the street? What about other people staying there?

Got 15 of 21 films, a new low I think – but also made what I think was my first outright planning spreadsheet error, putting one film's screening into the wrong Wednesday and thus designing an impossible schedule with a clash in it. As it happens that film had sold out, but no retrying for it now!
Spreadsheet of film links and screening times spread across columns representing segments of days, to help pick slots which avoid clashes

Looked at X to see how others were doing on the #LFF hashtag (mostly better than me, 17,000th in the queue). Awash with scammers offering "spare LFF tickets" (to what?!). Reported them for illegality, got an almost immediate follow-up saying automated systems found them not illegal. Goodbye again, X

New DLR train rollout news coverage always calls the trains "state-of-the-art", but are we absolutely sure that this particular art's state hasn't moved on at all since 2019, when they were ordered, or 2024, when they were originally due to be rolled out?

If there's a cloud backup that would restore a whole bootable Windows environment exactly as it was a day ago quickly with a few clicks whenever anything breaks, I would be interested in it, once these next drives finally fail, I'm not investigating now in case I realise I've made a mistake 🫣

The OS does a clever storage pooling thing a bit like RAID but more flexible and easy to use/swap drives out in etc, so my plan with an existing 8TB and these two new ones should mean I never suffer data loss from these drives again
100
Paul @bitoclass.uk · 08/09/2026
This is for essentially a NAS but with really simple and reliable Windows backup and restore built into the OS. So I was looking at reliable NAS-oriented drives (Seagate Ironwolf/WD Red) and they cost a lot more than £400 for 16TB. Ended up getting an 8TB and a 10TB for redundancy, £795 total

You do if the motherboard (a) has no onboard graphics and (b) dates from when the card I mentioned before, which couldn't handle 4k, was in it. I don't think motherboard graphics would ever have been better than discrete ones, even if the motherboard had them
