I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

Me and a buddy silkscreened some shirts with an image from the galvanizing and triumphant climax of my friend Guy Maddin’s “Heart of the World,” one of the best films ever made, short OR feature length. Dang it, but they do look good.
An assortment of black t-shirts with the word “KINO” hand-silkscreened on them, an image derived from Guy Maddin’s astounding and magical short film The Heart of the World.

Sword & Backpack: The Three Companions, has now been out for a week and I have NO IDEA how to promote it except to tell you that it’s the first book in a (technically) middle grade fantasy adventure trilogy that features at least one recipe, a neat deck of cards, a play-within-a-book, and more!

Hearing that the new Resident Evil movie has Evil Dead vibes reminds me of this true story: a Capcom rep came to the office of the game mag I worked at to show us an early version of the localization of the first RE and told us that they wanted to market it as “Sam Raimi Presents Resident Evil.”

My eyes roll and my soul dies a little every time I hear someone yell the words “Stand down!” in a movie or tv show because a) it’s hack screenwriter shorthand for tough person bullshit, and b) it shows how brain-rotted the world has become when it comes to military/cop newspeak. “Stand down!” GTFOH

None of my insights about being in NYC on 9/11 are particularly deep, but yes, being partially woken up by the first plane but not knowing what it was, getting a phone call from my mom on the West Coast to actually wake up, watching the buildings fall from my roof in Park Slope…oof. It remains.

Had a vision of a comic book adaptation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show illustrated by the fella who did the Count Morbius comics for Dynamite Magazine (Arthur Friedman) and now I can’t help but mourn what never was and now never could be. Alas!
Count Morbida welcomes you to the Dynamite Monster Bash at the door of his mansion, surrounded by a host of monsters. Count Morbida invites you to Drop in For a Bite at his mansion, which is filled with monsters and ghouls. Ever the gracious host, Count Morbida bids you welcome to his puzzle page.

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

In my mind, one of the greatest sci-fi comics ever. Similar to the Marvel G.I. Joe books of the era in the way it takes a marketing tie-in idea that should be laughable and silly and turns it into something surprising, thoughtful, and damn entertaining.

It’s good to hear someone articulate this because I’m always out here wondering, “Am I posting enough? Am I coming up with cool marketing tie-in stuff? Do I lack what it takes because I can’t foot the bill for a book tour?” Anyway, Sword & Backpack: The Three Companions is out 9/15 from Penguin!

My pal @brandontsnider.bsky.social is all about those bookplates (and that bass), so I made some for my upcoming fantasy novel Sword & Backpack: The Three Companions (September 15th, Penguin Workshop). Each bookplate will be hand-cut, hand-stamped and hand-signed by me because why the hell not?
From left to right: a nifty looking rubber stamp of the Sword & Backpack logo, the logo stamped on a signed bookplate, and an advance copy of Sword & Backpack: The Three Companions, wherein folks will theoretically place a bookplate. Who knows?
