The thing about telling chatbot users that using chatbots deteriorates their epistemic connexion to reality, is that it fails to take into consideration that using chatbots deteriorates one's epistemic connexion to reality, such that being told it has deteriorated will not seem like a big deal

National security decision-making has a longer time horizon. It would be stupid for Canada, Europe, South Korea, etc. to act now based on assuming the US will be a reliable in a decade. We have shown that we are not. Many Americans still don’t appreciate how profound of a change that is.

The thing about trying not to pick a side is that the nazis *instantly recognize* which side you picked. They immediately identify you as an ally. They know exactly what side you're on. It doesn't fool the victims, it doesn't fool the Nazis, the only people it could possibly fool is centrists.

You got me thinking. From my machine I built in late 2024: My GPU would have cost roughly $800 more, storage $400 more, RAM $1,000 more, mobo $200 more. The *increase* on those parts alone ($2400) - not the full cost of the parts themselves - is more than the parts cost me in 2024 ($1861). INSANE.

A woman says "it's weird how 9/11 became a national holiday." Another woman, aghast, says "Oh No! That means..." We see Jack Skellington in the woods beyond Halloweentown approaching a tree with doors shaped like the World Trade Center. He emerges from an airplane bathroom in front of a bunch of terrified passengers and says "what's this?" We see the plane about to crash into tower one. Jack once again asks "what's this?"

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

Nice to have a citation for the stuff we all sort of assume to be true but question if it's just our own biases making it look that way
Screenshot from the article in the quoted post, saying "Piff and his colleagues found that upper-class drivers were more likely to cut other cars off at junctions and ignore pedestrians at crossings. Wealthier people also appeared more willing to lie at work. In one experiment, volunteers were left alone with a jar of sweets ostensibly meant for children. When the researchers returned, upper-class people had snaffled nearly twice as many candies as lower-class people.

“The general pattern seems to be that with wealth and rising power, you become less engaged with the needs of others and less burdened by the needs of social relationships,” Piff said. “Taking candy from children might be the least of our worries but it’s emblematic of the tendency to prioritise one’s own needs over those of others.”
