Yeah, I'm one of those people too. I think it's just that IRL I come off as earnest, so folks naturally trust me. Meet someone, and then an hour later, "I've never told anyone this, but after my uncles molested me..." I take that trust as a compliment, but it can be intense.

That was something that affected him personally, so he cared about it. It's an extremely common pattern with "conservatives" - unless it affects them personally it's not an problem and they will just use the issue for political gain however they feel is convenient in the moment.
