Hi @datavisfriendly.bsky.social! Qq-- how do you decide who or what to cover in your #OTD series? I would imagine there's considerable research required to surface new features. Am I right to interpret it as a form of apostolic or scholastic succession?

Everybody always talking about "kill your darlings" but where are the odes to the person who has to go back through 4,000 lines of code to remove 750 lines, scattered throughout, which took weeks to write but are now impeding the original purpose of the code?

9/11 permanently broke a lot of people's brains and made them hate brown people for the rest of their lives. it juked us into an unwinnable war that killed hundreds of thousands of people with bombs and guns and starvation sanctions. it brought out the worst in us and made us worse. let people joke.

Cut from an essay but worth sharing, this is the list of projects I can recall from memory that has tried to make the internet more open. A lot of people have committed their careers to this. People care!
- RSS + Atom
  - arguably the most successful, given podcasts
- RDF & the Semantic Web
- SOLID, subsequently
- CouchDB
- IPFS
- Dat
- BitTorrent arguably
  - but it was always more file-oriented than web-brained
- Ethereum
  - yes, I include it
- ActivityPub
- StatusNet
- Tent
- Friendica
- PubSubHubbub
  - I am not making these up!
- OStatus
- Diaspora
- XMPP
- Nostr
- Secure Scuttlebutt

Two year anniversary of when I first posted this comic
Two panel comic. Panel 1: an anglerfish is washed up on the ocean shore, laying in the tide. It thinks to itself, “it’s so beautiful.” Panel 2: wide shot of the beach, rocky cliffs, and sky at sunset, with the anglerfish still laying in place. The anglerfish continues thinking to itself, “I might have never known.”
