Fascinating paper on the progression of women in academia. 👩🏻‍🔬 ⚛️ 🧪 #AcademicSky docs.iza.org/dp18477.pdf?... Here's an excerpt from the conclusion:
When women do obtain tenure, the effects extend well beyond their own careers. Beyond the direct promotion of the qualifying candidate, departments experience on average one additional female promotion over the subsequent fifteen years, a substantial expansion of the female PhD pipeline, and improved retention and career progression among female doctoral graduates. These effects are concentrated in departments where women are underrepresented, but not entirely absent, suggesting that a minimal female presence is a precondition for trickle-down effects to materialize, whether through mutual support, departmental influence, or other channels that require women not to be entirely isolated.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

In this Review, Cheryan et al. describe how access, masculine cultures & positive experiences come together to shape women's participation in STEM fields and therefore explain gender disparities 🚨FREE🚨to access until Dec 2! go.nature.com/4fRjkdb #psychology #psychscisky
Considering a STEM field as a swimming pool illuminates how access, masculine cultures and positive experiences come together to shape outcomes for women. a, A person who is not allowed in the pool will not be able to enter (lack of access). b, A person who is allowed in the pool but has been socialized to not like cold water and perceives the pool as cold might be reluctant to jump in (effect of masculine cultures). If they are required to jump in and the water is as cold as expected, they might jump back out and be even more reluctant to jump in again next time (experience that reinforces masculine cultures). c, If a person is required to jump in and finds that the water is warmer than expected, they might enjoy themselves and continue to swim (effect of positive experience). d, Perceiving warm water from the outset might encourage a person to swim on their own accord (absence of perceived masculine cultures).

Our new paper shows that men benefit from couples' long-distance joint moves more than women do, in both Germany and Sweden. Is this just b/c men are usually the main breadwinner? No, it's hard to explain the patterns we see w/o a gender norm prioritizing men's careers. www.nber.org/papers/w32970
Moving to Opportunity, Together

Many couples face a trade-off between advancing one spouse’s career or the other’s. We study this trade-off using administrative data from Germany and Sweden. We first conduct an event-study analysis of couples moving across commuting zones and find that relocation increases men’s earnings more than women’s, with strikingly similar patterns in Germany and Sweden. Using a sample of mass layoff events, we then find that couples in both countries are more likely to relocate in response to the man being laid off compared to the woman. We investigate whether these gendered patterns reflect men’s higher potential earnings or a gender norm that prioritizes men’s career advancement. We provide suggestive evidence of a gender norm using variation in norms within Germany. We then develop and estimate a model of household decision-making in which households can place more weight on the income earned by the man compared to the woman.
