Models like Talkie-1930 sound like voices from the past. If they could reliably speak from specified historical vantage points, researchers might also use them to simulate the past. But how reliable are they? Today we release a benchmark answering that question for English contexts 1831-1930.

Free-text evaluation of answers to character modeling and constrained generation questions. This is just one of several scores Chronologic-EN can produce; we focus on it here because it's both the hardest test and the one most relevant to simulation of the past. Frontier models reach 72%; Talkie-1930 is stronger than several larger competitors, but not at the frontier by this measure. Note that this score has improved ~45% in the last two years, but still falls perceptibly short of ground truth.

Good news, my mom is Alzheimers is safely in her new assisted living home, cared for by an amazing staff and she is living closer to me too, so I can see her often. It was quite a task to get her there (the culmination of a 4 year odyssey), but thankfully she actually went voluntarily! Phew

Released in September 1976, the REMCO line of McDonaldland dolls is now officially 50 years old! The full set of figures included Grimace, Mayor McCheese, Big Mac, Hamburglar, Captain, Professor and Ronald with incredible packaging and plenty of soft goods and accessories.

Tonight I'm playing one of my favorite #Atari 8-bit arcade conversions, Konami's Gyruss. The excellent Atari port was done by the folks at Parker Brothers and features an awesome Pokey chip version of Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. I'm a bit rusty, but damn it is fun.
