A grayscale illustration of an IBM PC desktop computer. This was Mattie’s family’s first computer. Although by the end of the second week, the computer was a family computer in name only; Mattie took over the beast and eventually convinced her parents to move it into her bedroom. It was 1982. This was now Mattie’s computer. She remembers a game she played on it: Adventure in Serenia, about a princess who’s been kidnapped by an evil wizard and you, the player, have to save her. It wasn’t the first damsel-in-distress video game—that would have been Donkey Kong the previous year—and it definitely wouldn’t be the last. Mattie was more than willing to overlook the sexist plot contrivances because, it turns out, she got a kick out of rescuing that princess, again, and again. And again.

"In the 90s, this is how you'll write code."
In the 90s, this is how you'll write code.

In the 1990s, code will be generated by the click of a mouse or a tap of a key. With Matrix Layout 2.0 you can do that now. And the results will surprise you.

Preview the 1990s with Layout.
In Layout, you create programs by designing an object-oriented flowchart, with all the options of traditional programming. It’s a
technology we call desktop programming. Once you’re done, simply choose the language you want for the finished program.
There’s Microsoft C, Lattice C, and Turbo C, as well as Turbo Pascal and Microsoft QuickBasic. You can even create a EXE file that’s ready-to-run on any IBM PC or compatible.

1990s Power without 1980s Pain.
Because Layout works with today’s stan dards, you can painlessly take advantage of the power behind Layout — object oriented programming, CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering) technology, hypertext databases, and graphical user interfaces. All
without giving up your favorite computer language.

An Architecture for the 1990s.
Layout comes with objects that produce real code for everything traditional computer languages can do — math, branching, variable
management, complex data structures — and it extends each language to include powerful user interface and hypertext database capabilities. But best of all, you can extend Layout past the 1990s by building your own objects — BlackBoxes — that can do anything you imagine. Added together, Layout cuts your development time by up to 70%.

Welcome to the 1990s.
Ready to jump into the 90s? Get Layout today. It’s available for just $199.95. Or for a glimpse of the 90s, see the Layout video tape
for just $9.95. Give us a call at 1-800-533-5644

You've set me down another rabbit hole. Interesting enough, it looks like the first containers used for storage and transport were trays made from tree bark 500k-400k year ago. 25k years, there seems to have been a container revolution, though. share.google/5Vk2HWjo9DLm...

A history of containers, an ancient technology hundreds of thousands of years in the making
We hardly give them a second thought, but everyday objects like bags and backpacks belong to a long technological tradition that may stretch back hundreds of thousands of years.

At some point in ancient prehistory someone asked this same question and invented the basket. Then I guess baskets just kept getting bigger, along with the mechanisms and machines used to move them 😁

At some point while moving large numbers of objects around, you ask yourself, “why the f am I doing this?” But you never find an answer, never learn a lesson, and repeat the pain once every 5-10 years 😁

GOGGLES.BMF
A pair of red swimming goggles with tinted lenses. The goggles appear as a mid-credit scene in the underground film “Clip/Art Film.” Which is odd, because this 24-hour film, which consists entirely of hand-held shots of thousands of pieces of clipart, was written and directed anonymously. There’s not even a credit to Allan Smithee. The credits—director, cinematographer, producer, writer, grip, foley, and so on—are empty, except for one. Bratz dolls are credited with the catering. Presumably this is because “Clip/Art Film” was released in 2001 via USB flash drives illicitly stuffed inside Bratz doll boxes sold at Toys ‘R’ Us and other retailers. The 320x240 resolution, while acceptable at the time, is now considered to be low quality, and numerous Kickstarter campaigns have launched over the years to remake an HD version of “Clip/Art Film,” though every campaign mysteriously disappears from the internet before concluding.

For some reason I never really liked Mario Kart: Double Dash (GC)and consider it the worst in the series (hmm maybe 2nd worst after the GBA game) for reasons that are hard to convey Can anyone convey those reasons 😁 you can’t hop, maybe poor track design, music? The swap mechanic?

There is nothing inevitable about today's GenAI companies or market or product design or power dynamics. It's based on decisions, made implicitly and explicitly, by people. To imagine a better way we must realize how arbitrary all of this is. And who it serves.
