Proud to note my son and I had our first cooperative game clear last night when we finished TMNT Hyperstone Heist together before his bedtime. I had Leonardo and he had Raphael until partway through, when he asked to swap. Still managed to finish it without running out of lives and continues!

"Heads up birders, I would not be surprised if the biggest bird migration night of the year happens over the next 2 nights. Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight. That is a lot, but the pattern could not be better for migratory birds. A massive area of high pressure will turn the low level winds from the northeast to the southwest across most of the US. The last time we had anything similar to this in the fall was early October last year when a record 1.25 billion birds were in flight. I doubt we get to that level, but I suspect the number will top 500 million especially Monday night which looks to be the bigger of the two nights. You can help by turning off those outdoor lights on big migration nights, and the next 2 nights is about as big as it gets."

Welcome back to You Are Error, Aftermath’s podcast about gaming’s greatest misconceptions. For those just joining us, I originally launched this show more than a year ago, inspired by podcasts like You’re Wrong About, Maintenance Phase, and If Books Could Kill. My goal was (and still is) to demystify often-misunderstood elements of video games, whether that means history and culture, the development process, or real-world inspirations that shape what games are about. Previous episodes have covered Arabic, Twitch, horses, and the myth of the solo indie dev, and future episodes will dig into everything from Steam to arms manufacturers to marine biology.
Unfortunately, not long after I launched You Are Error, the daily responsibilities of journalism, another podcast, and running a worker-owned business piled up, and something had to give. That thing ended up being this show. But thanks to Aftermath subscribers and the resources they’ve provided—for example, money to pay our podcast partners, Multitude, for slick video and editing—I’ve been able to revive the show with a more manageable schedule and long-term plan for guests. In short, we’ve never been more back.
That in mind, I figured we should re-begin on a fitting note: the disastrous conclusion of what was, up to a certain point in the 80s, the video game industry. I didn’t just pick this topic because I thought it’d be funny, though; the video game industry now once again finds itself in a period of existential turmoil, with AI, layoffs, studio closures, and an endless barrage of competing media threatening to crash the traditional games industry as we know it—or at least transform it into something unrecognizable.

I say this every year, but seriously: the Vintage Computer Festival is my favorite show of the year.

A SWTP computer (circa '76ish) with matching TV Typewriter II. A small, black and white 70s monitor sits atop the TV Typewriter. The TV Typerwriter is a wedge shape, framed with black painted wood, and has a chrome panel behind the keyboard keys.

An 80s era front projection TV. Three tubes, about 4in in diameter, sit below, one for each color of the RGB standard. A mirror reflects the combined image up onto a curved, 30ish inch screen perched atop the main unit.

A Mark-8 computer. It original debuted as a set of instructions courtesy of a 1974 issue of Radio-Electronics. It has a a front panel festooned with flat toggle switches, and three rows of red LEDs for indicators.

An analog computer: a Heathkit EC-1 ! It has a large front panel with banana plug jacks for the interface, and is connected to an oscilloscope for output.
