A note of optimism to be found is all of these governments are inheriting very real problems and powder kegs set to implode on them and they are uniquely unequipped at doing anything but making them worse

the international right wing and US capital have an iron monopoly on the entire planet's information technology & data flow, and are directly using this everywhere for their purposes, and neither leftists nor liberals have an answer to this because they are wedded to cellular localism.

This is *the* main continuity between neo-fascism and the 20th Century variety. Erich Fromm argued exactly this in "Escape From Freedom," saying that modernity left many alienated and socially dislocated--and fascist strongmen promised to restore meaning and purpose to their lives.

I am now calling a moratorium on takes declaring: 1.) "quick prosecutions" solve fascism (Flavio's dad was prosecuted and barred from office for Brazil's J6 incident) 2.) left-wing populism solves fascism (Lula is the Bernie of Brazil)

I do think this should put some of the hand-wringing over the uniquely sinful American electorate, uniquely feckless institutions, etc in perspective. The truth is that there is a large trans-national constituency of people who actively want this. They aren’t deceived. They want this.

I’ve been on this train for a minute now but I truly think the only way to prevent another Trump from happening is to destroy the right wing information ecosystem. They have built a monster from the ground up through talk radio, Fox News, and now X and far-right influencers. It needs to burn

If Bolsonaro Jr. wins, Brazil will be part of a Latin American wave of rightwing presidents. He won't be an outlier. The left wing's economic policies aren't (sufficiently) popular and people want the hard mano dura law and order. The army's reentry into politics in the region affects this too.

Can you imagine being a Northerner at the start of the civil war. All the fancy lad West Point military guys are Southerners. Your president is a backwoods yokel one term congressman and your generals are some guys we found at a 7-Eleven. It's over for our ass...unless all those guys are geniuses

A big moment for me was seeing people (mostly educated!) who didn't know who Amber Heard was suddenly villainizing her in the group chat. Propaganda works and our online infrastructure is set up to elevate grievance and hate.

A broken public sphere where people get their news and worldviews from the online world is a permanent advantage for the far right. We can see this globally.

the biggest political legacy of the 20th century wasn't "atlanticist liberalism". it wasn't "eastern bloc socialism". it wasn't "postcolonial national developmentalism". all three eventually died and from their corpses rose one thing: italian fascism

The thing about fascism is that it's easy. It's easy to cause fear and hate. It's easy to blame complex problems on minorities because the solution is too hard to understand. It's the lazy, sociopathic person's political stance. Anything that requires actual discourse requires effort.

Fascism in the '20s and '30s arose from military defeat, national trauma and extreme economic instability. Present-day fascism seems to arise from boredom, impatience and chronic public amnesia.

The majority of people “cancelled” are rich men who actually did something wrong so maybe they lost out on a couple paychecks. They are nothing like the actual victims of the Salem Witch Trials, who were innocent women and girls EXECUTED out of societal bloodlust and paranoia.

seeing conservative men debate how to dress online is very funny. can't dress up or wear interesting casualwear bc you've made any visible interest in dress to be a sign of homosexuality. but you feel the need to dress better bc you've linked dress to respectability. a prison of your own making.

I am tired of saying this, but most current analysis of Latin American politics is not valid if it doesn't account for civil-military relations. Not even Colombia, Argentina, and Guyana. There could be outliers like the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, but they are few.

I'm feeling very cynical, so here are my takes on what electorates have learned/are/want: 1. Electorates hate incumbents. 2. Electorates see politics as a mix of sports & reality TV. 3. Electorates mostly like fascism if it's done with a light-ish touch.

We would all have better conversations about Zionism if we viewed it as a nationalism like all others, akin to diaspora Serbian nationalism from Canadian Serbs. Not a civil rights or social justice cause, but also not a way Jewish people are abnormal or ontologically evil.

conservatism has lost in the marketplace of ideas and so embraces a postmodernist epistemology: there is no objective reality independent of discourse only competing narratives and one cannot in principle adjudicate between them; free and open debate then becomes an endless relativist churn

The pundit view of the world is skewed by many things, one of which is a refusal/inability to understand geographic spaces that exist outside their own neighborhoods. It's all based on stereotypes and conjecture—even when they go to other places, and their columns are essentially bad travel writing.

Most of the talk about forgiveness and restoration is really about convenience. You don't want the hassle of kicking the sex pest out of your spaces, you don't want the Inconvenience of having to find a new video games youtuber to watch, so the onus is placed on people who have been hurt to forgive.

Why is reducing ideological bias a goal? To what end? Politics is almost always a fight over values, not facts. I don’t care if I am “biased” towards social justice, whatever that means.

Part of the subtext here is the elite conviction that African-Americans, in particular, are lazy frauds using affirmative action to steal space in prestigious institutions from their children and colleagues, which doesn't necessarily translate to anti-immigration sentiment more broadly.
