We need a party that starts out with a sense of its own convictions: Good government, an equitable and just society, zero tolerance for dictators, capitalist vultures, and foreign genociders. This is basic human morality and people are showing right now that this is what they thirst for.

these are our pianos, not theirs! I know this stuff can feel secondary with all of the immediate pain this admin causes, but in the face of such personalism, it also feels important to assert the democratic principle that these cultural inheritances don't belong to the president, they belong to us

Man, imagine you're minding your own business, getting kind of drunk with your friends at a picturesque brewery in Maine, when suddenly John Roberts walks by and you get to start heckling him. Must have felt incredible. That's the dream. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/u...
The chief justice used to preside over a Supreme Court whose members were afforded more privacy and freedom than many other public officials. Once, years ago, Mr. Lipson and the chief justice found themselves up the peninsula from Port Clyde without a car, Mr. Lipson recalled in an interview. So he stuck out his thumb by the side of the road and a pickup truck pulled over. He and the nation’s top jurist hopped in the back and hitchhiked back to town.

Now, Mr. Lipson said, he is cautious about introducing his friend to strangers. This year, on an outing to nearby Monhegan Island, people recognized the chief justice as he walked by a brewery and started to chant: You should be ashamed.

School vouchers programs in the US date at least to 1960s and integration. They were a key mechanism in the rise of segregation academies. Reagan and both Bushes pushed vouchers.

It's bad that an entire political party is allowed to regularly hold sham hearings in which the only objective, without even a hint of even faux sincerity, is to produce propaganda for a fascist administration.

People often ask me, "How is it being in Ohio?" knowing the attacks on higher education are acute here. But the fact is, nowhere is safe. Here's a story about senseless and devastating budget cuts in Minnesota. There is no political party that seriously defends higher education in the U.S. today.

There isn't a single trans woman in the WNBA. In 2024, the NCAA estimated fewer than 10 of its 510,000 athletes were trans—about 0.002%, or 1 in 51,000. Yet trans athletes are a defining culture war issue of the 2026 midterms. It's a manufactured panic, writes @angryblacklady.blacksky.app.

The Panic Over Trans Athletes is Fake: Opinion
Republicans have manufactured a crisis in women’s sports, just in time for the midterm elections. Democrats should find the courage to defend trans children—or at the very least, leave them alone.

The thing about the college sports issue is that every conference or league rule change, and even new government policy, are all designed to skirt the elephant in the room: the "student-athletes" who actually attract millions of dollars are not paid.

Exceptional solidarity from ASU hockey players who have demanded their coach be placed on leave for essentially overseeing the murder of their teammate and have disputed the university’s findings. www.nytimes.com/athletic/764...
Seven Arizona State men’s hockey players asked the university’s president to place the Sun Devils’ coaching staff on administrative leave pending further investigation into the workout that left sophomore transfer Matthew Mayich on life support.

In a 26-page letter sent to ASU president Michael Crow on Monday and obtained by The Athletic, the players disputed numerous findings from the university’s initial review of the Aug. 20 workout, writing that Mayich did not receive water and was provided inadequate medical care after his collapse.
