Dave Sims just said, "This is one of the worst defensive performances in the postseason I've seen, maybe ever." Remember the Yankees are such a badly coached team that they made John Sterling - as good-natured as they come - say late in his life, "The Yankees run the bases like a bunch of drunks."

I find myself concerned that the widening midterm map may create a set of expectations where we end up getting a D+7/D+8 year with some strong candidate effects but it gets read as a disappointing performance because the Dems didn't pick off Kansas, South Carolina, Iowa or Texas etc.

Main problem with the CA prop system is it lets legislators off the hook from doing their actual jobs and offloads the responsibility to voters who often have conflicting proposals in front of them with little real info about how to asses the tradeoffs. Y’know, the job of a legislator

I think the problem is that for whatever reason, society/the media/whoever have correctly determined we need a way to reintegrate millions of people into society and from that incorrectly determined the way to do so is for the people who were wronged to apologize to the people who wronged them.

Amazing how much has changed in the last 2 years. GOP was throwing parties and declaring a new era of cultural and political dominance over a 1.5 pt race where they way underperformed the fundamentals. Maybe the media and the corporations should stop bowing down to them? Washed.

I think this is actually a key difference between Thomas and Alito in that yes they’re both misogynists, but one is actually a lunatic radical with a real project to reorganize society around cruelty, and the other is a dipshit who doesn’t think about anything at all beyond his myopia

biden and lula both entered office without majorities sufficient to actually pass any real agenda; this is the root reason why both failed (well, lula might pull it out, but it'll clearly be phyrric). this should be motivation to lock in for midterms so the next dem president can actually govern

The Cornell report on the Future of the American University is a disaster, mainstreaming and endorsing profoundly reactionary right-wing diagnoses of higher education that have no business in a serious report on what higher ed is or should become.
Compare, for example, the Progressive Policy Institute’s report on The Distortion of American Studies
with a similar study of American political science from the Goldwater Institute: Richard D. Kahlenberg
and Lief Lin, “The Distortion of American Studies: How the Field’s Leading Journal Has Embraced a

One of my hotter takes is that the dominance of bourgeois values and all the attendant tastes, aesthetics, etc., how one navigates the world, was load-bearing for liberal democracies, and social media eliminating that as something aspirational or desirable has been broadly a disaster

jaw dropped when I read this www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/w...
But for many Brazilians, the most pressing issue as they prepare to vote on Sunday is a crisis much closer to home: crushing personal debt.
More than 80 percent of Brazilian families are in debt, a historic high for the country, according to the National Confederation of Commerce, a retail group.
Brazil also has the highest benchmark interest rate among 40 major economies, and families spend nearly 30 percent of their income on debt payments, according to Brazil’s central bank. In the United States, that figure is about 11 percent.
Unlike in the United States, where most household debt is driven by mortgages, in Brazil debt is fueled by credit cards, payroll loans and retail store installment plans carrying among the highest interest rates in the world.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a leftist who is locked in a tight race against a right-wing opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, has seized on this concern in the closing days of the campaign. On Friday, Mr. Lula signed an order banning online gambling, which was legalized in 2018 and has supercharged the household debt crisis.
Brazil is the first country, experts say, to ban online gambling after introducing and regulating the industry.

Why is reducing ideological bias a goal? To what end? Politics is almost always a fight over values, not facts. I don’t care if I am “biased” towards social justice, whatever that means.

There are reasons other than net take-home pay that generations of American parents steered their kids toward college. I don't see how "go into construction!" is helpful unless paired with more robust worker protections and a true safety net, especially in right to work states.
