On Andy Burnham's sudden bout of shyness. thecritic.co.uk/sanc...
The close of his statement was an appeal to our better natures. If we were going to ask Israelis and Palestinians to live side-by-side, he said, Britain also had to be a place where “people of all faiths and none have a right to live without prejudice or fear.” Listening to him was Andy Burnham, who has been strangely absent from our public debate for the last few days. In August, we couldn’t move for social media clips from the prime minister, standing on a ladder to discuss his first job, or sitting in a pub to rate bar snacks. But faced with masked thugs trying to shut down British ports over the weekend, Burnham seems to have lost the password for his phone. For a decade now, Britain has had a series of leaders apparently paralysed by the fear that if they say that racism is bad, they’ll be voted out. It would be nice to get one who had a slightly higher opinion of us.

I am bloody proud to be an #RNLI supporter and member! These brilliant men and women have quite enough to cope with without being harassed by the scum of the earth. Their only concern is to help people in danger at sea - not check passports first! Which is how it should be. Please RT if you agree🙏

Astonishing to hear people say they'd rather asylum seekers drowned than be saved by the RNLI. Next comes letting people die in burning hostels rather than be saved by the fire brigade and letting people get kicked to death in the street rather than be saved by the Police. Don't platform this hate.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

@bbcnews-uk-rss.bsky.social Lamentable coverage of the fascist thuggery which infected Dover and Portsmouth at the weekend. Platforming the criminal Danny Tommo without challenge, vox popping ignorant locals without balance, treating it like it was the expression of ‘legitimate concerns.’ Awful

Dear Nigel,
5 September 2026
MY COMMITMENT
At Reform UK's conference today, I have publicly committed to increasing the tax-free Personal Allowance to £15,000, in my first Budget called within the first 100 days of a Reform government.
This change would cut taxes for 40 million British taxpayers.
It would take 2.9 million people out of income tax altogether. It would ensure that the State Pension was not taxed.
It would be worth almost £1000 to an average working couple.
It would form the centerpiece of a new bargain with British workers; a new bargain that puts them first, and ahead of welfare cheats, foreign nations, and the bloated civil service.
MY OFFER OF RESIGNATION
This isn't an aspiration, nor is it an aim. It is a promise. It is a promise I made to thousands of party members in Birmingham and millions of voters across the country live and on camera. And it is a promise I plan to keер.
If I do not deliver it, I should not remain Chancellor. Please consider this my letter of resignation.
failing to The British people are sick and tired of Chancellors and Governments deliver on their promises. In business, those who fail to deliver are sacked, not given honours. Reform, as a party of successful businesspeople, will bring that culture to Westminster. The British people deserve accountability and, with you as Prime Minister, they will get it.
Britain is broken. Britain needs Reform. And we must deliver.
Yours sincerely,
Robert Jennick.

Things looking pretty grim in Sachsen-Anhalt. AfD on course for 44% of the vote. The only hope now is that the other parties can work together to keep them out of power. Not a strong hope, tbh.

Seems to have been a bizarre day at the #vuelta. On paper an ‘easy’ day, yet lots of crashes, including Pogačar, who was badly hurt and has had to abandon. More carnage in the sprint finish, too. All to play for now, I guess.

Jason Arday's death will/has quickly become about 'the media shouldn't be censored' & 'journalists shouldn't be condemned'. The discussion that should be had is why journalism can't calmy reflect & scrutinise itself. It's about the culture. The water we swim in. The knee-jerk response confirms this.

It’s time the government acted on this. Taxing larger & heavier cars more, given the additional damage they cause, would be a welcome start.

Glad to see this from my former archdeacon, the Bishop of Thetford.
A Statement from the Bishop of Thetford
I was saddened to see the scenes of unrest and intimidation on the streets of Thetford. What we have witnessed is indefensible and deeply distressing. My prayers are with everyone who has been affected, especially those who have felt afraid in their own homes, and with the police and emergency services who are keeping us all safe.
The challenges facing our communities are complex and different voices should be heard, but there is no place for this sort of action. Every person is made in the image of God and worthy of dignity and respect and we need to work together for the peace and flourishing of all.
Thetford has a proud history of welcoming strangers and the diversity of the town today reflects a long story of integration. My prayer is that this can be rediscovered and celebrated to build a strong society of support and cohesion. That is what our churches are doing as they live out Jesus' call to love our neighbour.
I would simply ask everyone to join with me in praying for the peace and prosperity of Thetford and especially for those now living in fear.

Spain are incredibly competent at keeping the ball, but their basic game plan is to suffocate the life out of their opposition, and, consequently, the game. They don’t have much of a cutting edge. Argentina, while scruffy, negative and often underhand, won’t lie down. Result: boring game.
