There's a way yesterday's failed attempt to frame up Jack Smith for perjury could've been covered as part of the same story — the deadly serious abuse of the DOJ by Republicans to ruin the lives of who they perceive as political opponents — but instead it was like "EMBARRASSING WHOOPSIE"

In 2018, Annalinda Martinez and her daughters became homeless. She went to Georgia's child welfare agency looking for help finding housing. Instead, the state took her children. Then DFCS began charging her for their foster care. Those bills eventually left her $13,000 in debt.

Georgia removed her kids because she was homeless. The state is charging her $13,000 for foster care
Georgia is among several states that have moved away from charging parents for their kids' time in foster care. But parents who already owe money for past cases are still on the hook.

The Trump administration is cutting financial aid for degrees it says don’t “pay off”—including social work, early childhood education, and the arts. These careers contribute meaningfully to our society and we should be creating pathways to education, not erecting barriers. Congress can fix this!

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

Never understood this. The president oversees the executive. Exempting him from an injunction on the rest of the branch out of some reverence for the office always seemed off. But it's especially wrong when it's abundantly clear that the policy in question came directly from the president.

By Sarah Blaskey and Jonathan O'Connell
In the weeks leading up to his resignation last year, the first architect on the White House ballroom clashed with President Donald Trump over design features that the architect believed violated building safety codes, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions and corroborating documents reviewed by The Washington Post.
James McCrery II withdrew from the project last October after warning repeatedly that Trump was insisting on a preliminary design that did not provide adequate emergency exit routes or fire-containment measures, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private discussions.
Trump brushed off McCrery's concerns, they said, and the president countered that no building codes apply to White House construction.
"I am the code," Trump said.
