I remember my father telling me how anti trust laws worked as a kid. Something like "Well son, we have laws where one electric company can't just buy all the OTHER electric companies. Then they could just charge whatever they want because there'd be no competition." We were a very optimistic people.

Congress *can* discipline a president. They can sack his incompetent cabinet secretaries, refuse to confirm anyone who isn't competent and normal, pass laws to constrain his freedom of action and if necessary bully the judiciary into enforcing them.

I don't necessarily expect it, but the best thing that could come out of this mess - thin gruel for the human suffering it has entailed, but nevertheless - would be a resurgence of an assertive Congress, willing to use its power to discipline the president, to bend the executive (and SCOTUS).

The word "proxy" has become a catch-all reason to license a refusal to look at the reasons people have for doing what they are doing, by casting them as merely the agents for somebody else. Ukraine as a supposed proxy for NATO, Houthis for Iran, French lycéens for LFI. It is all so lazy and enraging

Hugo Chavez-linked PR flack Michael Shellenberger — a random guy with a Substack who rakes in donations to fight a “censorship complex” that he created — would like you to know that journalists reporting on his attempts to smear people are propagandists.
Lithuania's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. EU Disinfolab declined to comment.
"If you believe that emailing questions to government officials and others constitutes
'pressure,' then you are a propagandist and a toady and should stop misrepresenting yourself as a journalist," Shellenberger told Rapporteur.
An EEAS spokesperson said: "The reason for the request to remove the logo of the EEAS was that organisers chose to frame some of the discussions in a way which does not align with the official positions held by the EU. "
Global Affairs Canada did not respond to questions about its decisions to withdraw support.

To add to this a bit: in the mid-to-late-00s, military advisors going to Iraq and Afganistan were urged to watch The Sopranos to try to grasp the intersection of honor, family, money, and duty that they would see made manifest among their Iraqi and Afghan counterparts.

Skywatch got another email from Shellenberger. He’s a crank yes, but Canada, Lithuania, and the EEAS pulling their sponsorship definitely speaks to some some sort of political pressure campaign targeting #Disinfo2026 and now I’m worried about if I’ll be able to get home without harassment.
I wrote to you on October 3 about #Disinfo2026 and have not had a reply.
Since then the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote to me: "Upon becoming aware of the above-mentioned discussion topics, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania withdrew from any participation in the conference. The Ministry has also formally dissociated itself from the conference content and requested that the organisers remove all references to the Ministry from conference materials, communications, and promotional activitiesiỊại
Andrius Katinas of the Radio and Television
Commission of Lithuania wrote to me that he has withdrawn as a speaker "in light of the differences of opinion that have arisen with the organisers of the
'Disinfo 2026' conference regarding the assessment of the role of the United States."
The conference's sponsors page no longer lists the Lithuanian ministry, Global Affairs Canada or the European External Action Service.
Do you still plan to take part, and what is your response to the ministry's statement and to Mr.
Katinas's?
What have the organizers told you about these withdrawals?
The questions in my October 3 letter stand. I would be glad to talk by phone at 415-710-1042. Please reply by 11 am Eastern today, Tuesday, October 6.A poster with withdrawn sponsors covered up by printer paper

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

When Trump says “in two weeks” or “in a few weeks,” that does not mean he has a secret brilliant plan he’s about to execute. It means he has no idea, but wants to sound like he does, while keeping attention like a TV show going “all this excitement same time next week.” We’re a decade into this.

one of the ways the media shows which side they prefer, is which politicians they quote uncharitably out-of-context and which they clean up for even when what they actually say and do is offensive (the Biden story ran on the front page less than a week before the 24 election)

I am reminded of General Hammerstein-Equord’s classification of officers
'I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent - their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy - they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent - he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.
